    Larry Flynt Abets Andrew Cuomo

Pornographer Larry Flynt is abetting Andrew Cuomo's fight for the Democrats' nomination for New York governor.

Flynt, a darling of the left whose Hustler rag has featured such "artwork" as a woman being fed into a giant meat grinder, is among the sponsors of a $2,500-a-person fund-raiser being held Thursday for the former Clinton housing secretary in, of all places, Beverly Hills, Calif. An invitation lists Flynt as a vice chairman, a designation bestowed for $10,000+ donations, the Associated Press reported today.

"I guess it's who you seek out when you're blinded by naked ambition," said New York Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, an ally of Republican Gov. George Pataki.

Cuomo is best known for such kooky left-wing HUD schemes as blowing taxpayer's money on "new age" nonsense and gun buybacks.

The "featured guest" for the La-La Land gala is former Gov. Mario Cuomo, the candidate's daddy.

Will so-called feminists object to Flynt's involvement? Of course not; they don't even care if there's a rapist in the White House, as long as he's a pro-abortion Democrat.

I guess if our current President can speak at a racist university like Bob Jones, and earn the support of bigots like Jerry Falwell, then a Democratic Governor candidate can earn the support of a pornographer.

Two wrongs don't make a right, I'd say. That just lowers things to the lowest common denominator.

I don't think so either, and I highly question the use of Larry Flynt, if for no other reason than it brings criticism like this. I have no problem with p*rnography, however, as long as it's not forced.

If you can't tell the difference between the Falwell, who obviously holds strong convictions that you disagree with, and Flynt (whose daughter has charged him with child molestation), then there is no reason to discuss this matter.

Flynt is important to Democrats for 1 reason- he contributes money. The DNC has turned itself into a political w****.

If I were a Liberal, I wouldn't waste my time lashing out at Falwell. I would be writing an email to the DNC explaining how the Green Party will get my vote next election cycle if the current money raising tactics do not stop.

I don't like the opinions of the Nadar group very much, but they have my respect (as does Bill Bradley). As soon as the last remnants of the Clinton crowd are gone, the Democratic Party might be able to stand on principle again.

Falwell is a bigot. Flynt is a sleazebag extraordinaire. I have to wonder why anyone would defend either of them...

    BTW, the DNC isn't under Flynt's control. It's under China's control. :)

Not exactly. Here were Falwell's comments, which I found to be utterly stupid.

<b>"The ACLU's got to take a lot of blame for this. And, I know that
I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God or successfully
with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the
public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to
bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when
we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I
really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the
feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to
make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the
American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I
point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen'."

    -- Jerry Falwell, The 700 Club, 9/13/01</b>

I'm not supporting Flynt other than I support his right to do what he does.

I just don't think this is worth anyone getting riled up over.

From what I've seen, Falwell misrepresents the bible and uses it as propaganda to promote his own political and economic objectives. That's pretty obscene to me. But you're right, finger pointing is not a solution. Your letter writing proposal seems like a pretty good one to me.

I'm out for the night. :)

<b>RM95</b>: That's an obtuse version of what he said and that does not make him bigoted. You are more bigoted toward him than he toward the homosexual.

    <b>To Everyone</b>:

Why do people find Falwell's comments stupid? Do you just not like his theology? Is his idea impossible and preposterous?

A great way for evil to impact the world is for it to seek out innocents and destroy them. There's an old aphorism, "only the good die young." I wonder what that's about?

I think people get so angry with Falwell because they are included in his net of those who bear responsibilitly for God's hedge of protection being porous.

I believe that the proper response should be self-reflection rather than denouncement. Funny how one guy's opinion can be so inflammatory. Ever heard the saying, "the truth hurts?"

Here come the flames..... no, not electronic ones for me but maybe physical ones for some of you out there! Oh, now I've done it!

This is the problem with religion and politics in general if you ask me. Most mainstream religious and political leaders are complete scum and are many times worse than any terrorist.

At least they brainwash us before going into our pockets.

RR, I whole heartedly agree with you.

I am not a Jerry Falwell supporter but I get tired of people saying how bad other are when they stand up for what they believe in. All Falwell said was that taking God out of schools is bad. Abortion is bad. Homosexuality is bad. Paganism is bad. I concur with everyone of the things that Falwell said was wrong. All of these bad things collectively has corrupted the moral fiber in America and that perhaps God is punishing us as a whole for our deeds. It is something to think about and it would not be the first time that God has punished a nation for sins commited against Him.

I have a real problem with guys like Jerry Falwell being the "point man" for Christianity in the media. I can not believe he claims this is God's judgment...Pat Robertson went so far as to say he had a dream that told him this would happen, he just missed the date. The problem with that is that if it's truly God-inspired, he wouldn't miss the date, in the typical Christian viewpoint. Biblical prophecy is 100% right 100% of the time. These guys went off half-cocked and had to issue apologies after the fact. That seriously damages my ability to witness to others as a Christian, because people lump us all in together. I was quite happy to see that churches typically responded with aid for those directly affected by 9/11. That should be the Christian response, in my opinion...not judgment rendered through a mouthpiece after the fact. That sort of "newspaper theology/prophecy" is very disturbing to me! I truly hope that you all know that this is not the way I believe Christ tells me to respond to these situations. Christ was certainly about judgment, but He was also completely about compassion and love. That explains why He still loves and accepts a grotesque sinner like myself...and why He loved me before I ever loved Him.

Second...we see different means of judgment in the New Testament than we do in the Old Testament. Obviously the difference is the new covenant in Christ. There, judgment is reserved for the after-life...though, the consequences of sin (which some might see as judgment -- like losing your family because of alcohol abuse) are still intact.

I certainly wouldn't limit Falwell's ability to speak...but as a Protestant Christian, I find I don't want him speaking for me all that often...particularly in situations like 9/11.

The bottomline is that Falwell speaks for himself. I may or may not agree with him to some extent or another on everything that comes out of his mouth. Isn't everyone the same way?

It's his opponents who claim that he speaks for you and me... and all Christians. Leaders are easy to criticize because they say and do things in front of the world.

Let's not let the critics get away with distorting and demolishing his credibility entirely. Some of what he says is legitimate, some is off, some is way off. We should judge each remark on its own merit.

MM, you make an excellent point. I hope you were not mistaking my point as to mean that Falwell's judgement on others was correct. I was simply stating that the behaviors and actions that Falwell spoke of were wrong and that it has affected our morality as a nation. I do not think that 9/11 was God punishing us as a nation personally but it is something that I will at least condsider a possibility. It is something that no one will ever know. Here at least.

Actually, that has little to do with evil or the devil. It is a saying that dates back to the 1700's, possibly earlier, and was representative of the fact that so many children died before the age of 5 due to childhood disease that had not yet been irradicated through medicine. Here's one example of an early version of it...

    <i>The best of men cannot suspend their fate;
The good die early, and the bad die late.
Daniel Defoe, "Character of the Late Dr. S. Annesley (1715)</i>

The very fact that Falwell and those who believe him consider what he says a pronouncement of truth is what bothers me. No one KNOWS the truth. They can only seek it and have faith. Falwell acts like he has a direct and exclusive line to God.

The Pope has even said recently that non-Christians can go to heaven and that hell is a state of mind rather than a physical place. So, who is more right, the head of the Roman Catholic Church or a self-appointed man of God?

It doesn't make much difference to me, personally. I just don't like that posturing and weak attempts at scaring people into believing something just so they can avoid living in hell for eternity. Wrong reason to have faith in something, IMO.
