Shaq won't play for Sixers' coach in Athens

"Larry Brown's the coach? There's a pain on the outside of my knee in 2004," O'Neal said in mid-November -- just before it became official that Brown had been chosen for the job. "So, if Phil's not the coach, I probably will not play through the pain. However, Larry Brown's a great guy. He's done a lot in basketball. I wish him well. I love Larry Brown to death.

There were rumblings in the media today that O'Neal's not being petty. He just got married and his body needs the rest, even though he didn't play a full season. A lot of experts are saying that O'Neal's body is breaking down and he can't perform to his previously high levels without an extended break. Add to the fact he has a new wife, and I don't blame him for sitting out.

He's also still planning on playing basketball well into June.

From his public statements it appears he is sitting out due to the choice of the head coach. Doesn't really help his image much.

With the rest of the world catching up to the US talent wise, the US cannot afford to give all their NBA players a chance to play in international games. The best of the best need to go...unless they increase practice time. Shaq is the best American center, but publically he's says he's passing since his coach wasn't selected. Sad to see how little it means to represent your country in the Olympics for some NBA players.

He said that they were 55-0 with him. He already has two gold medals. He doesn't want to ruin his record. Sure...

Shaq's the most immature player in the NBA in my opinion. Between his trash talk (that they're sure not backing up this year) and his arrogance....I just can't stand him.

I love Shaq. Really. But is he a good fit in the 'int'l game'? I doubt it. Yao would be better. Ooops, he is not USA eligible.
