I think he is a good coach, but at the same time there are certain coaches like Larry brown and rick carlile while are good coaches just tend to wear out there welcome. Is JVG one of these guys? I think that was one of the great things about Rudy T. He played to his player's strengths. When he had dream and barkely he played post up to death. When he had francis and mobley he would do isolation all the time. Ultimately his coaching led the league to start changing the rules, but he was willing to change. Let us take Don Nelson for example all he wanted was to score 110 every night and didn't want to adapt to playing D and it AJ and his commitment to D before the mavs got to the finals. I think coaches need be able to change and they need to have some people skills or ultimately despite their success they will lose their sheep and fail.
Thank you Captain Obvious. It's not wrong for a coach to believe in their own system but you've got to work with the players and persuade them to buy into your system. See Pat Riley - he did all these motivational things that built camadarie and sense of team on the HEAT. Look what happened.
Van Gundy wins when the team is healthy. When they're not healthy, they're competitive. What more do you want, or what more do you expect from bringing in another coach? There have been very few stretches since he came to the team where the roster has been stable and healthy. It's not easy to adjust your rotation every 2 weeks because of major injuries. It's not easy to have 2 superstars and still fill the bench 8 or 9 deep with really good players. Maybe only 2 or 3 teams in the league come anywhere close to doing that. Again, when JVG has a healthy team, he's shown that they actually have a tendency to over achieve. Much like the 04/05 Rockets once McGrady got acclimated and we traded for Barry and Wesley. 35-17 to end the season, or something along those lines? The problem isn't the coach...it's injuries until proven otherwise. The system works but nobody is going to be a top seed in the West if their best players can't stay on the floor most of the season. That's my opinion.
do you realy think rafer wouldn't take those shots in ot and maek dumb fouls on defense even if we had yao? everyone knows that with yao we're contenders, but with rafer, how much more damage can he do, and when will jvg stop being stubborn and BENCH HIM.
Even if JVG is healthy I don't think he can maintain long term sucess. You can't just fight with your management. After reading about vspan and bonzi it doesn't seem coach and mangement are on the same page. If he wins a championship it is a moot point.
But do not neglect to say that Pat Riley is a great Coach who played his players using their best attributes. Each player on that great LA team had special roles to fill, based not only what the coach wanted them to do but what they were able to do!
i'm still undecided about JVG. i'm waiting to see how this team does this season. right now, they are overachieving without yao and JVG looks like he's worth keeping. i guess we just have to wait and see. if he will be replaced this summer, i would vote for these coaches as replacements: 1. Carlesemo - credited with the spurs offense + knows thier defense. 2. Adleman - because he looks like Gene Hackman... 3. sam cassell - he will be a great coach in the NBA, hopefully he can win more rings for the rox!
Larry is a very emotionally unstable individual, his insecurities will leave you stranded at the Altar. JVG's stubborness can give anyone gray hair but I like his mental toughness.I just dont like his"I won't play rookies"mentality
I say the Alien should be our next coach, Sam Cassell would be ideal its apparent how much his presence makes on the Clippers bench.
It's silly to think Don Nelson had nothing to do with the Mavs success. Every offensive play AJ knows is from Don Nelson. Dirk is a product of Don. The team's offensive philosophy comes from Don Nelson. AJ has not won a title yet. For now, he is JVG. Went to the Finals early in his career and that's it. The only difference is JVG took a 6th seed to the Finals, while AJ took a contender to the finals. This team needed and still needs JVG for this season. Everyone was complaining about the lack of discipline, too many isos, no defense, too much guard play, etc... JVG came here and turned into a team with a niche - the best defensive team in the league. Francis had his best year under JVG, and Yao's progress can be attributed to JVG's plan for him. He can have terriffic success with a team. But I don't think he can win a championship. What a team needs is to have all the talent and the right system to win a championship... THEN you need one of "those" coaches to come along and bring their only good quality - the ability to make a team take the final step. JVG has served his purpose. We will go to the 2nd round this year, maybe more. If he wins it, then I misjudged him and we keep him. If he doesn't, we find that coach. That Rudy T, that Pat Riley, Phil Jackson... The people who's best quality is not offense or defense... It's turning a finalist into a champion.
Jvg took a weak east team in a weak east conference! In a shortened season!! What has he done since!!!!!! NOTHING! Avery went to the finals last year and took the Heat to 6 games. What does he do for an encore???? 34-8 in a STRONG WESTERN CONFERENCE! He has passed the weakass JVG.
