And I want to know more about it. My brother and I were having a contest on finding the internets biggest nerd. We had google and five minutes. Ten seconds later I found this: http://64.202.163.199/chancekear/video/portallarpvideo.wmv And I realized that I had won the competition. As I delved into the video I learned what LARPing was and that it is hugely popular all over the world. I learned about foam fighting. I learned about coves and elders and wizards. I have become transfixed by it but not in a "I want to play" kind of way. And not in a train wreck watching kind of way. More like in a "I am fascinated by that which I don't understand" kind of way. So I ask you guys...do you or someone you knows LARP? Is there a larping community in Houston? Can I send a reporter out to cover a contest? EDIT: I also found these: http://64.202.163.199/chancekear/video/Cauldron2003.wmv http://64.202.163.199/chancekear/video/darkon_trailer_low.wmv http://64.202.163.199/chancekear/video/TrailerForm7_breedband.mpg
You got something against Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning? Sounds like a pretty good degree... http://www.umass.edu/larp/ N-E-Ways...Is this like that commercials where those guys are fighting each other and one of them casts monster, attacks the other guy, and that guy is yelling "RESET!!" Classic stuff...
I remember pretty well during sophmore year of college, myself and my roommates were sitting around in the dorms on the first week of school with our door propped open (so our neighbors could come by and introduce themselves if they were walking around). Anyway, this kid from across the hall comes by and says "hey guys, if you want to come watch, there is going to be a swordfight down on flavett field around 8 o'clock tonight." We all thought this might actually be kinda sweet to see, so I asked "Real swords?!". His reply was "No, their like these foam swords like pool noodles, but it's still pretty fun". At that moment we were all very disappointed that he took up a room on our floor that could have otherwise been occupied by girls. Stupid nerds.
I'm not proud of my alma mater on this one, but I know Rice has a big nerdfest every year. I'm sure there will be LARPing there. It'll be in February next year. http://www.owlcon.com/
I lived in the same dorm at TUFKASWT with one of those guys. He's the same chubby guy with a red afro that pops up in Old School, Van Wilder and Entourage.
Actually, this is the first video I found! http://www.coopster.net/Web Shares/LARP.mpg you might have to copy and paste the above link in a browser bar. Keep the stories coming. This is great!
When I went to Iowa State University for a competition years ago, I saw a bunch of guys dressed up like Middle Aged Folk with swords, maces, shields, etc.. fighting each other. We were somewhat curious and befuddled so we tried and basically you just hit each other and if you hit a limb you can't use that limb anymore and a head shot "kills" you for that round. Apparently, they have competitions at other colleges that involve hundreds of kids and armies attacking each other. That still is one of the wierdest things i've ever seen
We had that at my university, except it was called SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). They would do stuff like this all the time. I love the fantasy genre, swords and all that other mideival stuff, but I don't think I would ever get involved in this sort of play-fighting. "Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt!" Anyone remember that?
that was the exact moment that I knew it was, er, special. then when I found the creative use of Roman candles I was hooked. i also notice there are no black people involved in this, um, hobby. maybe Barkley is right. White people are straight up crazy.
My father and stepmother are BIGTIME into the SCA. They got married at the Yule Revel (XMas Party) in Clear Lake, go to Gulf Wars (a large gathering of SCA folks who get together and stage a "war") in Mississippi every year, she teaches belly dancing, and he is a swordfighter (using actual epees, not foam noodles). Strange stuff, but then again my father is the strangest person I know.
Damn, you stole my thunder! That was the first thing that came to mind when I firt started the video.
i'm speechless, other than i can't stop from laughing. Thank you for bringing this up Chance. I needed a good laugh.
The idea of foam swords doesn't sound bad; at least no one gets hurt and you get some real exercise (unlike sitting around rolling a twenty-sided die, or whatever that thing is, and talking about how many "points" you have). SCA sometimes seems a bit much in that I'm not that into the RenFest-type stuff. I've never done roleplaying or SCA or whatever, but I always end up with friends that do, so I have to at least defend it. Besides, the gender ratios are often very favorable...
It seemed special when I found it. I'm not even making fun of them. Yeah its nerdy but they are obviously cool with that so that's not even a dig on them. It's just otherworldly. Of course, this is coming from a guy that found the time to do:This. and this.. Let he without sin cast the first stone and all that...
.... So... I don't understand... why would someone splice together a bunch of songs based on common words?
