A friend of mine is in London for the semester and she wants to get a new laptop, one she can order online. The cheapest one she's found that includes wireless capability (which she needs) is a Compaq Presario M2000. http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...ooks/compaq_presario&storeName=computer_store Anybody know of one that would be cheaper, or a reason why she shouldn't get the one she's looking at now? Thanks so much.
How about this Laptop instead? http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/featured_inspn_1000?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd $579, 40 bux for a wireless card. Only 6.5 lb. Not a bad laptop.
Buy the HP. It is a far superior computer than Dell and I work with many different brands, I really find it difficult to believe that Dell has so much market share. Their computer's are not designed as good as HP, by far. IMO
I don't get it either. Nor do I get my business professors' love for Dell. Oh well. I've had plenty of problems with mine that I shouldn't have.
Dell's failure rates have been higher than they usually have been, but Compaq's have been sucky for a few years now.
Like DoD said Dell laptops are not quite as good as they used to be, but they are still probably the second best out there (IBM being the top). Though I ended up geting an HP (DV1000) as my most recent laptop and have been very happy with it.
Check out the Averatec, at microcenter.com. It's the best Ive seen, its about $600-700 range with wi-fi.
Yes the best place to get a laptop is microcenter. I looked around for a couple of weeks and they have the best laptops for cheap. I dont know how they do it but they got crazy rebates that beats the hell out of competition. I just bought my laptop from there a week ago, and everywhere else they were selling that crap for 200 to 300$ more.
Plus get something like sony or toshiba. Do not ever get HP or Dumpaq, everyone that gets those laptops have problems early on. Sony and Toshiba always get good reviews. Sony might be a lil expensive but Toshiba is just as cheap as HP and Compaq.
The cheaper and cheaper they keep making computers the failure rate just continues to increase. From being in the Computer field for so long i am still a firm believer that you should really pay good money for a good product when it comes to electronics and especially computers. All these cheap computers and laptops that they keep bringing out to hit the lower market has really brought the quality that most of the brands have down.
I have an old HP OmniBook. I got it back in 2000, and have not had a single problem with it. The thing is tiny and still runs nicely. Only use it for the internet.
I had a Compaq Presario Notebook i got when i was working for compaq and that lasted a good 3 years or so. I still have it but need to get a new battery for it becuase it doesn't charge anymore. Eventually got a Sony with a 16" cuase i do a lot of graphic work and stuff and a big screen is a real necesity. That was a great laptop and had only problem and i got that fixed. Replaced that with the Toshiba Sattelite with a 17 inch wide screen and it has been great. It is a bigger laptop but it really has everything that i wanted and is a powerful machine with a brilliant screen.
I've had a Dell laptop, a Compaq, an HP. and I was never truly satisfied. It wasn't until DoD opened my eyes to the wonders of Sager laptops have I been truly happy. I love this thing!
I've had a Toshiba laptop that I bought in 1999. Completely worthless for anything other than casual surfing and a dvd player now, but hey, after 5 years of use, it's still running. The only problem in those 5 years of use? I had one pixel go out. If money was no object, I'd get either a Toshiba or an IBM.
I have both an IBM Thinkpad and a Dell Inspiron. Even though the IBM model I have is a bit more scaled down then the Dell, the IBM just feels more sturdier. And I have had power up problems with the Dell recently, just got the Thinkpad so no problems yet. On a side note, I can't believe how much it is ($600) to fix a cracked LCD on a laptop...let's just say putting your laptop in your check-in bag at the airport is not a good idea. If money was no object, I would get a Powerbook.
Yes forgot, if money really isnt an issue and if your open to learning a new OS.....Mac has and always will be a better machine than anything else.
