So I'm finally getting a laptop. I will most likely use it for school work and DVD player and videos. My budget would be around $300-$600. What are some good brands? And what are some good deals? Thank you.

I've been considering getting one of those Google OS laptops. They're pretty cheap and would seem to do anything I'd want out of a personal computer.

Hey OP, I am also about to start looking for a machine for my mom in that price range. I just got a Thinkpad X230 that I am loving so far, but its a bit out of your price range. I will let you know what I find.

Look for open box deals. Always buy something that was at some point more than what you paid for it.

My friend bought an Asus that cost 300 and we considered it a steal. But because the laptop was cheap the WiFi card was bad and wouldn't connect to his internet. We ended up returning it and buying an open box Samsung laptop that was marked down to 350 from 700 (best buy)

The laptop was a steal and it has great specs. So I'd advise you to be patient and try to get a computer that will last. I would definitely stay away from lower end Asus computers, and especially dell.

If I find anything I'll bump this thread for ya :)

Not looking for anything refurbished. I've had bad experience with used things.

My advice would be to expand your budget a bit and get a Macbook Air. I took the plunge last year and I will never go back to Windows.

The Macbook Air is so solid, it will serve you well for years and years. Very few moving parts. SSD hard drive. Near instant startup. No fan noise.

I know its more than you wanted to spend but I think the investment is well worth it.

Not sure why so many ppl are recommending MacBook airs and laptops with sad drives. The dude is on a budget. You can find all kind of good deals for about 350 at micro center or bestbuy.

When I choose laptops I look at specs more than brands. If you can get an i3 processor for 350-400 I would take that. When you're budget expands then I'd look into uktrabooks or MacBooks. I've worked with Mac a lot but still prefer windows os. Although Mac makes very good quality products. It's not worth tripling your budget at this point.

Disregard. Just noticed your budget was upwards of 600. I would still get an i5 windows machine that has some nice soecs

You can still find a quality laptop for that price. Go to Frys.com and check 'em out. Plenty of i3's in that price range and even a couple i5's.
