I am looking for a new latop. Anyone here have the 17" laptops? Is it much better than the 15" ones? Techbargain and Couponmoutain are the two places I am looking for deals, just missed the 45% off deal, hopefully another great deal will show up soon.

I thought about getting a 17", but then to me that defeats the purpose of a laptop... they're big. I decided to go with a 15.4" widescreen. The screen is big enough and it's small enough to pull out and put back into its case easily (such as on flights). If you're not going to travel with it much, I guess you could go with the 17". I just didn't want to lug one around.

If you are going for the lowest price.. buy a Dell

If you want the best (all around IMO) and for travel.. buy a IBM the Xs are hella good computers..

For a desktop replacement 17".. I'd buy a Toshiba widescreen

If you have the money and want a high performance gaming/media laptop check out Alienware.

I recommend IBM Thinkpads over just about anything. They are robust and reliable. I've heard that Sony Vaios are pretty good too, but I don't have that much hands on experience with them.

Generally speaking you are probably correct, but from personal experience my daughter's motherboard or disk controller just went out on her 18 month old ThinkPad. Obviously that is probably an isolated incident and she also didn't follow my advice with respect to laptops - always get an extended warranty.

I got the 17" laptop and I kind of regret it.......

I wish I had the smaller screen but it works better for demos.

Is it because it is too big to carry?

Go with a thinkpad if you have the money. I have one now, and I've rarely had a problem with any of the Thinkpads I've worked with. Dell is a different story.

HP has a new line of "business" laptops that really look to me like they are top-notch. But I haven't used one yet, so I don't know.

I am currently writing this on my new ThinkPad X41 tablet (convertible). The other poor saps in my class who bought the stock Dell laptops burn with jealousy when I flip the laptop into tablet mode and take handwritten notes in class. Plus, annotating is fun! For example:

I couldn't imagine buying a laptop without tablet functionality. Everything else is just... crippled.

I have a 17'' widescreen Dell and love it. The screen is much bigger than my old 15'' Toshiba, and my Dell actually seems lighter. The only problem is I had to buy a new case since the screen is so large.

actually i would not recommend vaios. they are not good values at all. you spend a lot of extra money on the sony name more than anything else. i work at a electronics retailer and a vaio is generally 2-300 hundred dollars more expensive than a toshiba or hp model w/ the same specs. also at least at my store the computers that we get returned the most are the vaios....now that may just be a random thing.

one of the things that attracts customers to vaios are their xbrite screens which now all companies are starting to use and the design. most of the customers who buy sonys from us are actually foriegners who trust the sony name more because sony is such a global giant that they (the customers) can get any sony accessories or parts wherever they are.

i would go for either a turion 64 or centrino processor w/ a 15.4 inch screen. toshiba to me have been a great laptop.

I tried repeatedly to get my son to get a convertible. He refused.

Can I use a convertible to take notes at meetings or with clients? When I've tried them in the computer stores they seem like the writing is inevitably large and sort of "clunky". This has given me doubts about tablet pc's. I've tried the Toshiba tablet pc's.
