To free the other thread to return to talk of only Shane Battier, I have created this one.
As the title suggests, the topic is the comparison of Tony Allen vs Shane Battier. Please enter all ideas and thoughts on the topic in this thread.

Please feel free to discuss the topic at length.

Tony Allen has indeed grown as a player, providing great boxscore statistics in Rudy Gay's absence, and OJ Mayo's doghouse occupation. He is also thought to provide great intangible production by certain members of the board.

On the other hand, Shane Battier, in his second stint with the Grizzlies, has not increased the statistics on his boxscore. He is generally known as a player that provides intangibles.

Does the +/- stat provide a holistic view of the intangibles production? I doubt it. Does it provide any information about intangibles at all? I sure think so. Battier is assigned to slow down the best of the opposition attack, and thus +/- would need some sort of adjustment in order to accurately capture his ability. Now, I'm no visionary and can't see the adjustment yet. However, I am led to believe a member named Kwame is thought to be able to provide ample information about this general subject.

Has Tony Allen himself improved? absolutely. He is a good player with a reasonable contract for what he provides. Is he younger and therefore more athletic than Battier? Yes he is indeed younger and more athletic. In their primes who was the better player? Which player is more coveted around the league?

I, and a certain other member, would love to hear your thoughts on the matter. Please focus these thoughts here.

He's pretty good defensively. I dont think he's good offensively but he can put up some points as well.

His steals have helped me a lot in fantasy basketball lately as well!

I know you were trying to help by creating this thread, but it's not changing anything. A mod might as well just change the title of the other thread to this one. The other thread will likely be closed and Kwame will come in here to mention every single thing Allen did better for every single game. You just gave him a new outlet for his obsession.

and it's PISSING ME OFF. his great play (he has sustained it for pretty damn long) has helped overcome gay's absence. and it has messed up our playoff hopes.

god sometimes i want to reach across the laptop screen and slap him so he can fall back down to earth.

Tony Allen has single-handedly turned Zach Randolph into a defensive presence. Enough said. Even Shane would admit that Allen is better at this point.

Thing is, that Battier was one of the best position defenders of all time. Allen was and is more of a harasser. So their games are vastly different to begin with. So I could be completely right because I am only seeing the flamboyance of allen's game rather than the subtle beauty of what shane does.

I'm just glad the grizzlies have both of them.

Believe it or not, Shane's best season, statistically, was his rookie season.

Battier's not fit to shine Tony Allen's shoes at this point in their careers. Allen's arguably the most effective ball-stopper in the NBA, and according to Hollinger, deserving of a spot on the NBA's All-Defensive 1st-team... not to mention, he's currently being labeled "The Man" by Memphis newspapers. He's a much more versatile weapon offensively and is far superior athletically... also, his defensive prowess this year puts Battier to shame. In all honesty, how is this even up for debate?

Because there are a group of blind, fanatical supporters who will never criticize Battier no matter what.
