Why oh why did the Texans bypass Kubiak six years ago as head coach?

Do you think he would have worked out then or was he too inexperienced.

He's got something going on there-- makes me proud to be from Houston!

I'm glad they waited, cause I think most coaches woulda been sh*tcanned eventually starting a new team..

Not that Kubes wouldn't have done a better job than Dom/cASSerly.

But the degree of difficulty would have doomed him.

As someone who plays Monday morning quarterback on every offensive coordinator in the world and continually pulls his hair out at how teams call games... I have to say how wonderful it is to watch the Texans. I nitpick everything more than I should, and imo, their playcalling is simply outstanding. Tremendous mix and balance. Kudos to Kubiak and Mike Sherman... and hahaha at the clueless Longhorn fans (not labeling all, I like UT too) who declared Kubiak's tenure a failure simply because he's from A&M.

I think he could have saved David Carr's career at least. He might have actually turned into the quarterback we envisioned he would be.

Carr was already damaged goods when Kubiak took over, Kubiak made the right decision on getting rid of him.

I know, im just saying what would have happened if we actually hired Kubes 6 years ago. He prolly would have still been fired due to the amount of losses we would be getting since we were so crappy and fans calling for his head. I believe any head coach would fail in those circumstances due to the pressure.

its not about the play calling, its about the preparation, the dude runs a tight ship. he runs more than capers, and oh yeah, his qb doesn't dump off at the first sign of trouble.

I've never seen a houston pro football coach in more command of his team except for fisher. I wasn't on the kubiak bandwagon till he benched carr in tenn. he has no problem getting in his players' faces. he's very van gundy like in his bluntness, but there's a something fake about van gundy the way he always tries to criticize himself that you don't see with kubiak.

edit: he runs the football more than capers.

True, but im saying if kubes got him when he was a rookie. Under good tutorship he might have actually turned out to be a good QB.

I think Kubiak himself said that he wasn't ready to be a head coach six years ago.

He wasn't ready. The additional experience with the Broncos made him prime when the Texans did hire him. So timing was everything.

I don't think we can honestly say that becuase we don't know how Kubiak would have handled the expansion draft. Capers and Casserly did all the picks and moves so we don't know if we would have lost all those games. We could have been a better team with a different coach and GM.

Also . . I think we have to look at the way He and the GM are running the drafts and player movement too

I think Caper's issue were as much about Casserly as it was about Capers

Watching Schaub for the last few weeks, I'm glad it happened like it did.

Had we released Carr a year earlier and drafted a QB, we would be stuck with Matt Leinart or Vince Young and we would have never traded for Schaub who has more upside than both of those guys IMO.

Well Schaub should look better than Leinart or Young now because he's been in the league longer. If Arizona can finally create some stability around Leinart (a BIG if...) all the while adding good players, then I view his upside as being the best of the 3. I wanted the Texans to draft him instead of Bush or Mario (can you imagine what he'd be like in Kubiak's offense?). I'm still scratching my head about what to make of VY aka "The Chosen One" and have no idea how he'll wind up - I still have some doubts about his passing.

And another thing to consider about why Schaub looks so good now: he's playing in an offensive system (WCO) that he's been trained to play in since college. If there's one thing to really like about Kubiak, it's that he does know how to match and integrate a QB into his system. He did it in Denver with Jake Plummer and is doing it here now here with Matt Schaub.

if kubiak told me the capital of Texas was Reynosa, I would believe him. That's how much I trust him. :)

totally agree, these guys are on the same page but independent.

that's exactly what i'm saying, I had my doubts but this guy is the real deal.

in the age of free agency, your coach is more important than ever. since these teams cannot stack talent like the early nineties cowboys and forty niners, you have to be able to adapt to personnel and flat out out-coach the guy on the other sideline.

I wonder if he would have taken Peppers with his first pick kind of like how he took Mario?

All I know is ... how deliriously happy I am we got him and not some retread. I said when we hired him he was going to turn this franchise around, change the culture and toward the end of last season (Patriot debacle excluded) you started to see a new wind blow here. Now, we have a tremendous blend of youth, experience, skill, talent and the last, CONFIDENCE. These guys are really started trust each other and really battle for each other. Trust me that Carolina game was a volumetric boost in confidence for our guys. I don't if we will beat Indy or not but know this right now it is getting more and more difficult to go against these guys they are really getting good, scary good. Our only impediment/weakness has to be our safety situation. If Demps and Boulware can solidify that, we move Petey to nickel and either have Fletcher or Bennett at CB opposite D-Rob, man it's scary to think how far we might go this year! Kuby already gets my vote for NFL Coach of the Year! I know it's presumptuous but, trust me barring some ... I'm not gonna say it, we aren't going to fade, we're gonna continue to get better as the season continues. When did you ever think something like THIS was going to happen? :D  :D
