OK, I work for a music promotions company, and I'm having trouble getting a hold of KTRU. We've heard rumors that they're now known as KRNU, and we're having a tough time getting a hold of anyone there. Basically, I'm just curious if anyone here goes to Rice and has any insight to the campus radio station situation. Thanks in advance.
Big time weirdos that work over at KTRU. I think B-Bob used to have a show there, if that gives you any indication.
i remember listening to their punk/ska block on thursday nights back when i was in middle school. i remember thinking that the chick hosting it sounded sexy in some weird punk way. but they definitely play some strange crap. listening to some dude bang on wood was not good music.
KTRU has moments when it is ok. I find it hilarious listening to the stoner dj's read the announcements. Man, that is awesome. But, when I turn it on and all I hear is ambient noise and feedback for like 5 minutes straight, I wish that the station would be bought by Clear Channel and turned into easy listening music just to spite the people that play that crap. Not to get off on a tangent here, but we have to have the suckiest collection of non-profit radio in America. KTRU has moments, but it isn't close to resembling normal college radio. KUHF won't carry all the NPR stuff because of the classical freaks and doesn't play any college music at all. KTSU is a great jazz station, but it can't really afford the cool NPR shows that it should run. KPFT has its moments - running World Cafe, some interesting shows - but then it also has stuff like Native American music and WAY too many long-winded, lefty political shows that are boring as hell. There is no good college radio station in Houston and that's a shame. I guess I have to stick with web casts.
those thursday nights were awesome. i used to tape them all. i have no idea where those tapes are now.
I somewhat agree with Jeff. Each and every time I have tuned into KTRU I have also heard ambient noise and feedback. Why anyone would classify noise as music is beyond me. As far as public radio in Houston goes, KPFT stinks musically during the week but it is a fantastic station to listen to on the weekends. All day Saturday you get Texas Rock/Alt-Country/Texas Singer-Songwriter music and all day Sunday you get the best blues music programming in this part of the country. KTSU plays great jazz and really shines on the weekends when they start playing old-school funk, soul and R&B. Los Angeles is the only other place I have lived for a sustained period of time, and so it is the only other city I can compare Houston to as far as public radio goes. In LA, KCRW rules, and they have great shows during the day, but to me they do not come close to KPFT as far as playing great music. There is a jazz and blues station out of Long Beach that plays good stuff, but their signal is very weak and not available throughout the LA Metro area.
That was Melissa, but she had a realy monotone voice. I still have cassette tapes of recorded shows. The stations pretty much stinks now other than the country/bluegrass type show they have on Thursday evenings.
Did she go by Queeny or something like that on the air? If so I remember listening to her all the time. She was great. "Someone call up and tell me a joke about death"
How can you not like the Native American music? They also used to have a good electronic music show. KPFT used to have the Fun House Show hosted by Chuck Roast back in the '80s. Anyone here ever listen to that? It was great!
That's the number we have, and when I called they kept saying it was KRNU and they hadn't heard of KTRU. Odds are, I keep getting a new trainee or something. God bless the summer months for college radio. Thanks for the help guys, I'll just keep pestering 'em.
Local show Tuesday nights at 8's good. Usually hosted by Justin Crane or Scott Butt. Sometimes Mike Switzer. Jenni Rotter's kids show Saturday at noon's the best.
Jeff, the World Cafe no longer is carried by KPFT because the WC folks had the audacity to get a sponsorship from evil defense contractor Lockheed Martin.
If you spend a day listening to KTRU, you will probably hear the worst song you've ever heard on the radio, as well as the best song you've ever heard on the radio. I appreciate the adventurousness of it, and they can get away with their schizophrenic format because they don't need advertiser or donor bucks to exist. It's my favorite station. Nuggets4 - there's the distinct possibility that someone at KTRU is having a joke on you. I wouldn't imagine they're hip to the idea of taking calls from a promotions company, unless it's some local indie thingy. KRNU is from the University of Nebraska.
If so, they're being morons. We send them music free of charge for them to use for whatever they want. I tried an alternate number we had listed for them today and got a machine for KTRU. Guess I'll just see what happens.
See, I hadn't turned it on in a couple months and this is the **** I get. Jeebus. Tex: I like the weekends too, but it isn't the same since they took Pickin' and Swingin' and Milestones off. Plus, my main beef is that we don't have a good plain ol' college alt.rock station. I'm cool with the Texas music even though a lot of it just isn't my cup o' tea. I just wish there was a straight up college station that played college music, some NPR, etc.
Jeff - It just happened a couple of weeks ago. On the Lone Star Juke Box Rick Heysquierdo was slamming the station pretty good for that decision. Also, I guess you try to get a streaming feed from somewhere. The World Cafe is broadcast on a number of stations that stream. For example, KUNI rebroadcasts the show from 10p-12a Mon-Thur. The weekends are still pretty cool on KPFT. I went to the Rhythm Room for a an afternoon show simulcast on Joe's Roadhouse. Sherman Roberston was the headliner and he was really good. I didn't care as much for the opening act , though their bass player has some things Jeff doesn't have, and vice versa I also miss Pickin' and Swingin' with Rick Gardner. I don't miss the jazz show as much because I don't like much of the post-swing era jazz, but I did enjoy it when Miles would play some older stuff. I think he did that mostly in the 7pm hour. Oh well. I haven't listened to KTRU in ages. Not sure I can even pick it up in my car. Might be worth a try though. Finally, any Guy Forsyth fans out there?
