I like him but he is a free agent this summer. With all the teams with cap space we either overpay or lose him going forward. Plus he is a solid piece, that works hard but will only help us remain mediocre.

How did he get a no-trade clause?

Good rebounder but doesn't change our fortunes.

I'd trade Scola for him in a heartbeat (expiring contract and could resign cheap)

He plays hard. I like players who are willing to play hard, grab boards and be at the right place at the right time.

He also blocked a Blake Griffin dunk

I thought I read someplace that Kobe has the NBA's only no trade clause.

I think we should help NJ get Howard. We could actually end up with a pretty good team. Not to mention the picks we could accumulate on the way.

Same thing I was thinking. Here's the reasoning:

[rquoter]Without the player's consent when the player is playing under a one-year contract (excluding any option year) and will have Larry Bird or Early Bird rights at the end of the season. This includes first round draft picks following their fourth (option) season, who accept their team's qualifying offer for their fifth season. When the player consents to such a trade, the team loses its Larry Bird/Early Bird rights, and the player is considered a Non-Bird free agent. Note: when there is an option year involved, they can get around this regulation by invoking the option prior to the trade.[/rquoter]

The reason for Humphries waiving his right to veto any trade (due to his "One-Year Bird Free Agent" status) is simple:

He'll make MORE MONEY this way.

Typically, guys in Hump's situation are making only a decent amount of NBA coin ($1-3M?) and might really need to have Early or Full Bird rights to maximize their salaries. Rather than having Early Bird rights (which allow teams to re-sign players to up to around the MLE amount) or full Bird rights (allowing teams to re-sign players to ANY amount), being traded during their one-year contract would cause them to become "Non-Bird free agents", who are limited only to 120% of their prior year's salary.

Humprhies is in a unique situation, in that he's getting PAID on his one-year deal. He makes $8M this season! Even if he's traded to another team, his new team (using his Non-Bird rights) can still re-sign him to a deal of up to 5 years, STARTING at $9.6M!!!

On the other hand, if Hump stays with New Jersey, there's a pretty decent chance that he gets his rights renounced by the Nets in order for them to sign Dwight Howard. Then, he's forced to take whatever cap room other teams are willing to offer.

Bottom line: Humphries waiving his veto rights may be the smart move here for him, especially if the team acquiring him is actually interested in re-signing him long-term.

(FYI: Carl Landry [who's making $8.5M on a one-year deal with the Hornets] is in the same situation as Humphries.)

They know damn well Howard isn't signing there. If it was going to happen Howard would have made it happen by now.

Patterson, at the very least, is a reasonable backup. With DMo coming over next year, we shouldn't be investing assets into another PF.

I might be convinced to trade PPat for him. He has certainly improved his game from when he was drafted. I watched him when he played in Dallas and he was pretty bad then but I have seen a couple of NJ games including the one a couple of days ago against the Bucks and there is no denying that he is that teams 2nd best player. I would take him over Brook Lopez any and every day of the week. Brook is just embarrassing to watch. A center that never met a rebound he liked.

If a very good to solid power forward is out there on the market, you have to pick them up regardless if Motiejunas comes over next year. If we have a chance at getting Anthony Davis, Andre Drummond, Sullinger, or Moultrie through the draft. I would still grab one of those players, as well as if a player like Humphries, Gibson (Taj) - doubt it, though, or a long shot, like Pau Gasol.

Motiejunas has potential, but it's questionable to decide he is an NBA all star. Moreover, shouldn't he have to compete for a spot on the team, it's not like he's a proven commodity, sort of like the rookies coming in.
