Not a knock on Kobe, I appreciate that he's working to improve his game. He wasn't exactly giving Dirk props though. http://gotemcoach.com/post/22296664349/the-iron-leg-dirk-nowitzki-showed-the-world-his
would have been more interesting if Kobe also stole Dirk's height otherwise who cares if he steals like a ridiculously effective move by Dirk
There's another quote in that article worth mentioning: "Dirk created the best post-Olajuwon post move in basketball, Kobe understood it’s value, and put it in his game. That’s why he’s great — anything to get better. Last night, Bryant used it in the Playoffs." What are you looking at? They are identical.
Kobe's does look smoother and I guess it helps him create separation, but Dirk has the height, you cant block it. I guess Kobe's is better since Dirk doesn't even need to do it.
The key is that other leg kicking out making it impossible for the defender to block or impede their vision when they stepback and fadeaway.
I always try to lear moves I see the pros do. I remember spending an entire afternoon trying to learn Crawford's shake n bake. Pick up the MJ/Kobe fadeaway from the post, it's unstoppable.
Maybe. But I'd say it's simpler than that. The key is it is faster than a regular step-back which involves gathering both legs under you. Dirk shoots this off the step back leg without wasting time getting the other leg under him, and it's the wrong leg he steps back with. Dirk invented the step-back jumper off of one leg. Others are off both legs, with the step-back being from the right leg (or left if you are left-handed), then you gather both feet under you and jump. Stepping back with the "wrong leg" allows he to shoot immediately, because the shooting hand is closer to the basket that stepping back with the right leg. Right?
Kinda relevant. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/HfewOvwxMR0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
one is a 7 foot tall white guy and the other is a 6 foot 7 black guy.. Hmm i agree with napalm .. doesnt look anything alike at all
Looks like Kobe added a shoulder/head fake to it, throwing the defender backward, while Dirk just rises up.
Yeah, I agree going immediately to one leg and already in your shooting form is a part of the success, because Dirk is not the quickest low post player and doesn't have the most nimble feet. To overcome those limitations he used his 7 foot height advantage, shoots from almost behind his head, and that kick out leg to create additional space in addition to going to the one leg and being in the shooting motion already makes his shot pretty much unguardable. But look who else did that, albeit less because he was almost always quicker than his defender and had more moves (first move in the clip): <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/K7tPZ-KljR0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
While I understand that technically it is a post move, i guess, i have a hard time considering it as such. It's catching the ball in the post, stepping back and shooting. It's a move, barely. Post move? I guess so. I guess if a simply hook shot can be considered a post move, then this can be, too. BUT, it's clearly not a post move in the same way Olajuwon's moves were post moves, imo.
