You gotta love this. EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Kobe Bryant says he harbors no ill feelings toward Portland's Scottie Pippen. But he couldn't resist one little dig Wednesday. "I have no problem at all with Scottie," Bryant said at the Los Angeles Lakers' training facility. "I don't know him as a person. He tried to do everything in his power to help his team win. He failed miserably." With that, the assembled media burst into laughter ------------------ I voted YES!

That wasn't just a slap, that was a beheading. ------------------ My company declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy, then agreed to merge with another company, which also declared for Chapter 11 bankruptcy... should I be worried?
I now have a newfound respect for Kobe. ------------------ Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.
Among the NBA players named after a Japanese steak, Kobe is my all-time favorite. (Kobe is a city, but also a type of steak.) ------------------
I don't. I like guys who don't feel the need to acknowledge their opponents off the court at all, except in praise. I'm cool with Kobe's backhanded slap of a completely deserving Pippen, but my respect goes to guys like Tim Duncan, who not only lets his play speak for himself, but who, in resisting the urge to knock other players, shows infinite more class than anyone who might knock on him. ------------------
I definitely agree with that statement. Though I liked what Kobe said, that is showing a bad sense of sportsmanship. ------------------ "I would like to live forever, because we should not live forever, because if we were ever supposed to live forever, then we would live forever, but we cannot live forever, which is why I would not live forever." -Miss Alabama in the 1994 Miss Universe contest
Here's a must read for all Pippen haters from his old hometown paper: www.suntimes.com/output/mariotti/jay29.html ------------------
In context, I think Kobe was trying to say the sportsmanlike thing, but got tripped up by an impulse to make a wisecrack at the last second. From a slightly fuller quote in the Los Angeles Times, here's the first part of what he said: "I have no problem with Scottie. I don't know him at all. I can't judge him. All I know is--what I respect--he tried to do anything in his power to help his team win." Pretty classy so far, right? It's just that in thinking what to say next -- acknowledging the fact that Scottie didn't win -- the jab popped into his head (and probably out of his mouth before he had a chance to think about it). BTW, another anecdote from the same Times story, about Kobe guarding Steve Smith: "The ref came up to me during a game and said, 'You guys have to stop fighting down here. Kobe, stop holding him.' "I said, 'Man, I don't have enough years in the league to hold Steve. I don't know how to cheat. I'm learning how to cheat.' "The ref said, 'Oh OK, Kob . . .' "There's a lot of talking going on. Some of it's harsh but Steve Smith and I were very friendly." ------------------ [This message has been edited by Swopa (edited May 03, 2001).]
