So If Kobe Doesnt play , Steve Francis may have a shot at being a replacement , But since Kobe is a 2 guard , If he doesnt play , My guess is Derek Anderson will take his place .

Bryant says Lakers come before All-Star Game

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ESPN.com news services

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Lakers guard Kobe Bryant said he may not play in the NBA All-Star Game next Sunday because of his sore right shoulder.

"We'll see how I feel," Bryant said after practice Saturday. "The All-Star game isn't as important to me as benefiting this team in the second leg of the season, especially because we have that tough trip coming up. So, if I need to rest in order to benefit this team in the second half of the season, then that's what I'm going to do."

NBA commissioner David Stern has threatened to smack players or slap them with fines and suspensions for not participating in the All-Star Game.

"I'll take the fine," Bryant said. "If I have to do that to help this team in the second half, I have no problem with that."

Bryant, voted a Western Conference starter in the All-Star Game, has been playing with swelling inside the shoulder capsule and an inflamed rotator cuff. He said treatment hasn't helped much and whatever progress he makes on off days is undone in the next game. Without extended time off, Bryant said the shoulder might not heal.

"The way that the game is, you get banged up all the time," he said. "Especially if people know that you have a weakness, they're going to go after it, and they're going to attack it."

I doubt it. Payton will play alongside Kidd as usual at the guard spots. Finley will become the backup SG, and Francis will be the backup PG. Unless Van Exel has a chance..

Remember players aren't picked by specific position, just by G,F,and C. So, if Steve is the next best G out of SGs and PGs he should make it. It would probably be between Steve, Van Exel, and Stockton.

Even if Steve isn't officially a 2 guard, much of the league believes he should be anyway.

whats your fetish with derek anderson moestavern? The guy is not that good, and has no chance at making the allstar team. Just because alot of stupid spurs fans got his allstar vote totals high, doesnt mean he's next in line.

    Moes,

I've watched the Spurs a lot this season, and Derek Anderson is a pretty good player. But by no means is he anywhere close to an All-Star type player. The Spurs stuffed the ballot boxes to the point where Avery Johnson, who hasn't hardly played this season, had more votes than Michael Finley for the All-Star team. Derek Anderson is good, but he's no All-Star. Trust me here.

hehehe...Speaking of Derek Anderson...A couple years ago when Barkley was with Houston and Anderson was in Clipper Land, I remember CB picking him up and CHUNKING him to the floor...I mean, Barkley used no effort at all...he tossed him like a Ceaser Salad...funniest thing I ever saw in an NBA game...

As for Steve, I would still rather see him in the rookie game, but he's a competitor, so he'll play in the All Star game if given a chance...Let's see, 20 minutes of Steve in the rookie game, or 10 minutes of Steve in the All Star game?? I'll take the former...

Good, hopefully this will be one less game when I have to see Kobe. I'm getting sick of that guy, and he's only like 23. [IMG]

I don't know where this "Derek Anderson isn't a good player" thing got started, but it couldn't be further from the truth! Granted he isn't an All-Star, but a guy averaging 14 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.6 assist and shoots 39% from 3 point range is a pretty good guard! He has long arms and is phenomenal defender. He isn't flashy, but he is a very good player and he's getting better every year. In fact his stats dropped this year because he is on a MUCH better team, at title contender. So I wouldn't say that Anderson isn't that good. I think he's going to be a future All-Star.

    wrong.
    wrong.
    wrong.

tell ANYONE in san antonio that, and they'll tell you the same. derek anderson IS flashy. derek anderson is TERRIBLE on defense. derek anderson is a PURELY offensive player. derek anderson, in fact, is EXPECTED to leave san antonio at the end of this season. wanna know why? to get more personal glory.

derek anderson is a cheap man's cuttino mobley. a very cheap man's, indeed.

    *****************

in fact, if derek anderson got in instead of cuttino, i'd be thoroughly pissed, as should every one of you. put cuttino mobley on that team and see how much better they'd be.

spur's players, including avery johnson and david robinson, have spoken on derek's lack of work ethic TO THE MEDIA. derek's lack of defense was THE PRIMARY SUBJECT of the spur's 4 game swoon a week or so ago. what have the spurs been saying all season long that they need? SEAN ELLIOT. why? cause he'll play the d and take the shots that derek won't.

derek looked good against houston because of our lack of inside presence.

    derek anderson an allstar? [IMG]

Cuttino Mobley, for one. But I've always thought he was a pretty good defender, and I found this excerpt in the Chronicle today.

    http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/sports/bk/bkn/814491

Cuttino Mobley's 28 points Saturday were his most since he scored a career-high 41 at Golden State on Jan. 18.

He had made just nine of 24 shots this past week before matching up with Derek Anderson, who is considered one of the NBA's best defenders.

But Mobley started quickly, making eight of 12 first-half shots, and knocked down 12 of 23 overall.

"It doesn't matter if he's the best defender in the league," Mobley said. "I just go at them. I don't care who's guarding me. Derek Anderson might be one of the best defensive players in the league. The shots just went down."

I try and read a lot on the Spurs-- they are my 2nd favorite team to the Rockets-- and NEVER have I seen any player criticize Derek Anderson publicly. In fact, I've heard nothing but praise on how great of an acquisition he was. Could you please give a link or something to those comments by AJ and Drob about Anderson?

DA at this point is much better than Cuttino.

Anderson plays defense (Mobley doesn't or can't), Anderson can score but at the same time involves his teammates (not as much one-on-one playing) although Mobley is a much better ono-on-one player.

I guess I tend to agree with Moe that he deserves mention as an all-star this year. He may not be quite there yet but he has been a great addition to the Spurs.
