The Knicks' fixation with Jeff Van Gundy apparently still is very much alive.
According to a league source, the Knicks contacted the Houston Rockets to inquire if they had hired former Knicks assistant Brendan Malone as a special consultant.

Malone was fired by the Knicks on Jan.14 but is still being paid by them. The club would be obligated to pay only a portion of Malone's contract if he took another job.

Malone was in Houston for a week as Van Gundy's guest. Malone was on Van Gundy's staff in New York for four seasons starting in 1996. Malone also has worked with Rockets assistants Tom Thibodeau, Steve Clifford and Patrick Ewing.

Van Gundy declined to comment on the issue but did confirm that he invited Malone to Houston to watch the team play.

wouldn't mind another great mind on the bench w/ JVG, esp. since he's worked w/ the others b4 as well.

Malone would be a GREAT mind to add to the bench.

He was VITAL to the Detroit Bad Boy's teams, and he was so well thought of, that he was named as Toronto's first ever coach when they expanded.

Any coach with championship experience is a plus, and you can never have too many assistants... unless you're Dallas.
