    Is this a joke!

How can we call it the Allan Houston rule?

The Knicks must really be off their head to not waive the player the Rule was named after.

OR, THE KNICKS MIGHT BE NEGOTIATING A BUYOUT OF HIS CONTRACT; THEREFORE MAKING IT IRRELEVANT TO CUT HIM.

But, the bummer is that this can't be called the "Allan Houston Waiver"

    He's not really a 3, more like a short backup 4.

If we were going to get rid of Juwan, then sure, bring in JYD for cheap.

    otherwise, pass.

I'd love to have Williams on the bench, but we've got to clear up our cap situation and get rid of some of the junk on our roster before we make anymore signings (other than bare minimum players). I'd really like to bring in Baxter for camp and see what he can do.

I don't understand...unless Allan feels sympathy for the Knicks by retiring...saving them some money some how. I would have thought he was would have loved to be waived, so he could get his guaranteed money and then sign with the Pistons..................then retire on their butts lol Crazy....I guess we'll find out eventually what's going on.

Oooh by the way... JYD isn't signing the LLE. He's worth 2 to 2.5mil on any team because of his hustle alone. And besides............we have the White Version for cheap. Ryan "buy me off" Bowen

Allan Houston is serisouly considering retiring. he is going to get paid no matter what, so he isnt doing the Knicks any favors by retiring.

I checked his playing time at 82 games and he basically split time between 3/4 so he can and does play 3. Now whether that was because Thomas filled the Knicks with a boat load of 6-9 PF and someone had to play 3- I don't know. Also he played in 79 games last year and 68 the year before.

But correct me if I'm wrong......when a player retires, he negotiates a buy out sum with that team which is usually considerably less than what he was guaranteed. Now in Allan's position, they might negotiate a lil more than normal because of the special circumstances. Here's my question I would like for someone to help me out with. If a player retires and a buyout happens................how does that affect that teams cap situation. I assume they would not get relief for that year, may get the relief after that.

wasn't jerome williams the same guy that was known as the "junkyard dog" in toronto? if so, i'd like to have another JYD but the one that was in toronto and not the Jerome Williams that's been riding the pine in NY

    http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#58

"The agreed-upon buy-out amount (see question number 57 ) is included in the team salary instead of the salary called for in the contract. If the player had more than one season left on his contract, then the buy-out money is distributed among the seasons in proportion to the original salary."

The Rockets could do this as well with players that won't/shouldn't play but have a contract - Baker & Moochie. They could buy them out at like 90% of their last year salary and pay it upfront instead of throughout the entire season.

I think there's a difference between buying out a guy and having him retire due to medical issues. First off, if Houston retires insurance will pay 75% of his remaining salary. And secondly, with the new cba he should come off the cap after 1 year. So if he retires now, the Knicks only pay some kind of deductible and he'll be off the cap for next year meaning no lux tax on the salary.

And I'm not sure, but they might even make the 1 year retroactive to his last game. That would mean he bounces off the cap during the season. That would be a huge bonus to the Knicks if it happened.

how good is allan houston at this point? if he could still play, rockets should pick him up either as a starting 2 or backup for tmac. last i saw him, he was still shooting lights out but i think that was a while ago.

If Houston retires with the medical insurance (which I'm sure he will), the Knicks just saved a whole lot of money. As MCable put it, insurance will pay for 75% of the 40M. The Knicks basically got a 2 for 1 deal.

As for JYD, I have always loved that guy's energy on the court. He is more of a PF than a SF though. If he would come for cheap, he could be a nice replacement for Padgett.
