As Knicks GM Scott Layden combed the NBA rosters for a young big man, he gave a call before the trading deadline to the Rockets. No, not for Yao Ming but for their starting power forward Eddie Griffin, according to sources.

The 6-10 former Seton Hall standout is one of the league's emerging young shotblockers, though he has not been a standout in his two seasons.

Although the Knicks offered Othella Harrington, a former Rocket whom GM Carroll Dawson likes, in a package, Houston wasn't biting. The Rockets turned down multiple offers for Griffin at the deadline.

    Are u kidding me?

Layden is the reason the Knicks are dying. I thought he was going to change at the deadline, and make up for his past blunders, but the guy is a freaking idiot. The Knicks won't get anywhere with him dealing with player movement.

They offered Charlie Ward and Kurt Thomas for Gary Payton.

It's not over for the Knicks. They are overpaying, so they might as well take on big contracts of disgruntled players. They can still be a contender by picking up the Stoudamire's, Mo Taylors, and Illgauskas's of the league.

Scott Layden must be the most stupid GM in the NBA. Does he really think the Rockets will fall for that trade? Although I never liked EG's game, anyone can tell you that this is a r****ded trade made by a r****ded GM. What he should have done is EG for Kurt Thomas. I would go for that.

Like Carroll Dawson was quoted the other day: It's funny how everyone (who called with a deal) wanted to make their team better but not ours.

My point exactly. See how it feels when we do it back to him. Then he realized how stupid he is.

He's stupid for offering Othella for Griffin? Well, if The Rockets accept that deal, then he's a genius and Carroll Dawson is stupid. EG is better than Othella on his shot blocking alone, and at least he has a CHANCE of getting better, whereas Othella has already peaked...

He's stupid for the contracts of Houston, Sprewell, Anderson, Ward, and Eisley. Any other GM in the NBA would have signed those players for half of what they currently make.

Offering up a trade that he knows is lopsided in his favor isn't stupid at all, except for having to pay for the phone call...

He's stupid because he was wasting his time to work on a trade that had NO chance to happen. According to your logic, he would be too busy to work on the impossible trades that would send his overpaid contracts for t-mac, kobe, shaq and kg:rolleyes:

That trade was about as lopsided as many we see proposed on this board (with the exception of being in the Knicks' favor).

Exactly, the best negotiations always begin right in the middle. Both parties are always too smart. So put a fair offer on the table from beginning and then get the work done.

    Wasting time??

    :::ring ring:::

    Carrol Dawson: Hello?

Scott Layden: Hey Carroll, it's Scott Layden from the Knicks.

Dawson: Hey, whatcha got for me?

Layden: How about Othella Harrington for Eddie Griffin, with some throw in players and possibly a draft pick.

Dawson: Uhhh...no, I think I'll pass on that one

Layden: OK, I'll talk to you later...

Yeah, I'm sure that conversation took longer than five minutes...

As for YOUR logic, there is a difference between lopsided and impossible, 'tard...Those trade scenarios are COMPLETELY different because Griffin isn't even in the same stratosphere as Kobe, McGrady, Shaq, or Garnnett. He'd have to have pics of one of those GM's having sex with a goat to get one of those players for a player on the Knicks. Othella for Griffin was worth at least a phone call

The Knicks were making all sorts of offers before the deadline, none of them realistic. Layden just wanted to be able to say that he tried to improve his $90,000,000-payroll-but-no-playoffs team.

I'm amazed that Layden still has a job.
And that was before I heard this, lol, but you can't blame the guy for trying. You CAN blame him for embarrassing himself and the Knicks. (not that I really care ;))

Layden has cow dung for a brain. Honestly, can't one of the most high profile team in all of sports find a better GM?

    A-Train,

No, it wasn't worth the phone call. You may not like Eddie, but to everyone else in the league, the guy has very high potential. There is absolutely NO reason why we would make this deal. Not money, talent, potential, immediate dividends, height, defense, offense, passing, 3-pt shooting, rebounding. Nothing. Layden has always been an idiot. This is just a smaller version of his Sprewell for Kobe deals.

Rockets03, it baffles me too. What gets me the most is, OK, so they hired the wrong GM that made huge mistakes. Now, why aren't they firing him?

At the very LEAST he could've had the decency of offering Kurt Thomas.

    Laughable.

We got offered Rashard in the off season for Griffin and we declined it. Why does he think we want Othella back.

BAH! I say that Othella for Griffin is worth at least a phone call...

    OK, how about this one:

Griffin and Taylor for Othella Harrington, Kurt Thomas, Lee Nailon, and Lavor Postell. Postell and Nailon are throw ins for salary purposes whose contracts both expire after this season, so this is basically Griffin and Taylor for Harrington and Thomas. We get rid of Taylor's contract, get an experienced, hard nosed power forward that shoots a high percentage and isn't afraid to bang down low, New York gets potential in Eddie Griffin and youth in Maurice Taylor. Overall, we save a little cap space because of the expiring contracts.

Would that have been worth a phone call?
