    From The New York Post

Would make sense on both sides: Knicks save even more money if he takes medical retirement versus a buyout and get the added bonus of waiving someone else like Penny, Houston avoids the shame of being waived. I think this is still a little iffy, considering how deluded Houston's been with the state of his knees. His knees are shot, and rehab isn't going to magically put cartilage back into them. He's looking at a cycle of rehab, playing for a month, and gong back on the IL for rehab again. If I were Isiah, I'd make this an ultimatum. Retire or we waive you on Monday.

Whats a "medical retirement" and how much does Houston still get? If he gets waived then he still gets his entire contract's worth right? If that is the case I would tell Isiah to bite my ass.

There must already be an agreement between Houston and the Knicks for him to retire because they are making a huge gamble otherwise.

The Knicks would prefer that Houston agree to a medical retirement, which would save them much more than just the luxury tax reduction of the amnesty rule. Houston would get every penny but insurance — not the Knicks — would pay 75 percent of Houston's $39.8M in salary , minus a 20 percent deductible .

So it seems that it wouldn't really matter which way Houston goes, he'll get his 40M no matter what.

He wouldn't lose money if he retired.

    thanks for the explaination

He should retire and do SOMETHING for the team
since he ain't done to much for them in the last few years

One more question: If he decided to come back in a year or two
how would that effect NY and him?

take one for the team . .esp when it don't cost you

What's your opinion on this if he still wants to play basketball and is capable of passing a physical?

I say he should force them to waive him

    It is HIS decision . . .
but if he wants to do what is BEST for the team . . .retire
    unfortunately
most players thing it is best for the team that they be on it . .. even if
    their skills have diminished

Kind of ironic this amnesty rule was given the nickname the "Allan Houston rule" and as it turns out, they might not even have to waive him after all.

Maybe it's me, but I don't see any shame in being waived. There will be some good players waived strictly for money reasons.

Is there an echo in here? One that occurs about a half hour after you say something?

    LMAO!

If I'm not mistaken, the Knicks save more money by waiving Rose or JYD than Houston - and they certainly don't need both those guys.

Plus, if he doesn't retire, H20 is a pretty juicy expiring contract to use in a trade next year, assuming Isiah wants to maintain his astronomical payroll.
