uly 4, 2010 5:41 PM 2 Comments Knicks had a second chance to woo LeBron » By Frank Isola The Knicks, who haven't given up on the dream of signing LeBron James, were granted a second meeting with the free agent superstar's representatives late Saturday in Cleveland, The Daily News has learned. According to a Knicks official, Garden president Scott O'Neil and senior VP of Basketball Operations Glen Grunwald were dispatched to James' hometown and held a brief clandestine meeting with James' reps to make a second pitch to the two-time MVP. It is unclear if James was in the meeting but it is believed that his business manager, Maverick Carter, and agent, Leon Rose, met with the two Knicks executives on the same day that James spoke to both the Cavs and Bulls. The timing of the meeting is interesting since it came one day after the Knicks received a verbal commitment from All Star power forward Amar'e Stoudemire. The Knicks wanted to relay to James that the organization is committed to doing everything in its power to surround him with talent. The sense the Knicks get is that James will likely re-sign with the Cavs. In fact, as recently as Thursday, one Knicks source said it was "very doubtful" that James would sign with New York. Also Sunday, Joe Johnson announced that he would re-sign with Atlanta. Johnson was considering both the Knicks and Hawks but without a sign-and-trade deal, those teams could only offer $30 million less than Atlanta could. The Knicks are like that single, older, less attractive chick who just watched her best friend get married: you can smell the desperation.
I am surprised that James would stay in Cleveland. I really thought he would leave for NJ or Chicago.
James remains Knicks' top target By Chris Sheridan ESPN.com Archive NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks held a secret second meeting with LeBron James' representatives to clarify exactly where they stood in regards to signing Amare Stoudemire, two NBA sources told ESPN.com on Sunday. The meeting, attended by James' agent, Leon Rose, Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald and others, took place Saturday morning in Cleveland before James himself met with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls, one source said. It lasted about an hour, with James' representatives wanting to know whether it was true (it wasn't) that New York had already formally offered Stoudemire a five-year, $100 million contract. LeBron Tracker James Where will LeBron James land? We're keeping tabs on the King. Here's the latest. LeBron Tracker James did not attend, nor did Knicks president Donnie Walsh or coach Mike D'Antoni. "It was somewhat of a clarification meeting to deal with some of the misinformation that is out there," one source said. A second source said it was the Knicks, not James, who requested the second meeting, which was first reported by the New York Daily News on its website Sunday afternoon. As has been reported by ESPN.com, the Knicks have told Stoudemire they have a willingness to offer him a five-year max contract, with everything contingent on what James decides to do. There is no shortage of players willing to team up with James in the Big Apple. The Knicks told James in their initial meeting with him Thursday that if he signs with New York, he can choose which free agent big man he would like to play alongside, be it Stoudemire, Chris Bosh, Carlos Boozer or David Lee. Stoudemire has fed into the folly by acting as though there was already an offer on the table, going so far as to tell reporters Saturday night that he was already recruiting Carmelo Anthony and Tony Parker to join the Knicks. "I've talked to Carmelo Anthony that he needs to come out here," Stoudemire said on Saturday. "I've talked to Tony Parker. Both guys are ready to join me if I decide to come here. So we will see if we can work it out." Parker and Anthony would not become free agents until next year. The Nuggets have offered Anthony a $65 million extension to remain in Denver through 2015. Parker would have to get to New York via sign-and-trade and Anthony could sign as a free agent next offseason, provided he doesn't sign an extension with the Nuggets this summer and that the Knicks clear enough salary cap room. In reality, however, Stoudemire will be seeking employment elsewhere if James tells the Knicks he wants to play in New York alongside a different big man. ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard reported that Stoudemire and D'Antoni had breakfast together Sunday. The purpose of the sitdown was to clear the air about any old grievances that may have existed between the two when they were with Phoenix in the mid-2000s, according to sources. The first face-to-face meeting between Stoudemire's camp and a full Knicks contingent will take place Monday. There were reports Sunday that Stoudemire wants to arrange visits with the New Jersey Nets and Bulls on Tuesday and Wednesday, but a third source told ESPN.com that no actual sitdowns had been firmly scheduled. The Knicks, however, are at the top of his list, according to sources. The news of the second meeting between representatives of James and the Knicks came as The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer was reporting that James will not reveal his decision until after his Nike basketball camp in Akron concludes Wednesday night. James will be free to sign with the team of his choice as of 12:01 a.m. Thursday, after the salary cap for the 2010-11 season is set. Chris Sheridan covers the NBA for ESPN.com. Not so fast my friends.... alanhahn Donnie Walsh says reports of meeting tonight between Knicks and LeBron in CLE is "misinformation" and says no meeting
Or someone could be lying... basketballtalk RT @PDcavsinsider According to league source, Knicks are planning another trip to Cleveland to meet with LeBron tonight
If they give $100 million to Amare, how Lebron can get a max contract?? Does the Knicks can keep Lee, and sign Lebron and Amare? And seems that Miami, Chicago, Cleveland and NJ are still more close than the Knicks.
LeChoke re-signs with the Cavs and uses that as an excuse for not winning multiple championships. He'll say that he placed loyalty above rings. .
backload the contract probably, what's their cap space? 30 ish mill? 15-16 mill in the 1st year for both guys and it works..........Lee they wont be able to keep though, unless he settles for the MLE which he wont.
