Seems like lately, a lot of players have had difficult times after any kind of knee surgery... Heck, even Kobe had some difficulty with his knee. Brandon Roy is the new victim which is very sad. Josh Howard continues to struggle with the injury... So do you pretty much not ever recover to 100% after knee surgery??? Toughest injuries to come back from??
Too many things to consider. Age, type of knee injury (patellofemoral inflammation, ACL tear, MCL,... ?), strength of the muscles around the knee prior to injury, bio-mechanics of the person, medical staff, and so on. Look at Amar'e. Dude is still a beast. Look at Griffin, dude is still a beast. Look at McGrady, dude is still a... eh. Too many things to consider.
Actually McGrady has looked pretty healthy from what I've seen. He will never be what he was, but I still think he can be a solid player on a contending team if he ego can handle that.
Tmac is or will be 70% of what he was by the time his knee is fully healed. It's still on the mend. Roy is a different case. Both his knees are stuffed but he still has alot of years in him so he might be close to what he was again. Kobe has regressed bigtime but thats more to do mileage and getting older.
I say if we had T-Mac facilitating with this roster minus KMart we'd be better off with close to or over 30 wins by now. T-Mac's playmaking offsets anything KMart can do for this team.
not enough rehab and time off...players opt for quick solutions to get back on the court and in the process screw up the knee more, so even another surgery can't fix it completely..
I had arthroscopic knee surgery in 2007 due to a torn meniscus. I've lost most of my range of motion and it flares up every once in a while. Recently found out I have Rheumatoid Arthritis too in the same knee and I'm only 23. I've been dying to get back on the court
The biggest problem is that the players opt to go with the quickest solution and RUSH back to the court. I tore my ACL, MCL, and LCL in my right knee in August of 2007 (senior year in college). I had surgery in July of 2008 and did Physical Therapy for 12 weeks. I didnt pickup a basketball until April 2009 (9-months post-op). I didn't start running/cutting or anything like that until about May 2009 (10-months post-op) to get ready for a basketball tournament which was in held in October 2009. I started lifting and getting the joints and muscles around my knee stronger before trying to run and cut at full speed. Even then I was VERY RUSTY, and my timing was completely off! After the tournament, just hit the gym again did a bunch of various types of leg workouts ("Insanity" workout helped the most). I played in another tournament in August 2010 and finally felt like myself again. Since then, I've been 99% pain free. I think players a lot of times feel obligated to come back as soon as possible because their contract situations or pressure from the coaching staff. McGrady's a good example - he kept saying his knee's not feeling right, but docs and coaching staff said its fine - was forced to play on a bad knee, and then finally had to shut it down himself cuz the coaches didnt seem to let him.
The McGrady thread has turned into a spank fest where T-mac fans have convinced themselves that he's the second coming of Steve Nash/Magic Johnson. 15-5-5 >>>> 30-3-3, apparently.
15-5-5 is better production than Mcgrady has had after his surgery. 15-5-5 is better than what haters thought he would ever get at any point after him leaving the Rockets. Bitter haters are bitter.
