First, i would like to say that this is not meant to disrespect coach McHale. I just want to ask. Has coach Sampson reached the players all of a sudden? That's two straight games with very good defense. He is now running more plays for Parsons with great results. Seems as if the chemistry all of a sudden kick-started. Sampson has been known as a defensive specialist and that is exactly what we have been getting lately. Are we about to have more controversy?
Remember Sampson said McHale would have input despite being away. I don't think we'll know who thought of what any time soon.
Case that what - he should be head coach? Afaik, he's on the phone with McHale everyday. He's doing everything McHale would be doing if he were here. The only difference is that he seems to be a more sympathetic guy. The team also has more experience now.
It could be just a case of the team getting the chemistry going, but the defense looks much improved.
Well what I like about him is he seems to be a decent manager of PT. Sure Mchale will tell him what to do on the phone, but on the court Sampson's the dude who tells which players to play what. I like how he sits the players if the team's leading. it drove me nuts last season when Mchale would play Lowry and Kmart like 38+ mins even in a game they already had in the bag.
What I see in McHale is an anemic coach intelligence-wise who will nevertheless listen to his players and the public opinion. So while we are happy sometimes, this combination is usually dangerous. He is the opposite of a van Gundy or Adelman. Unlike those two, he actually has people skills (while he's a coach, I'm not counting TNT version van Gundy) and doesn't put people off as a natural habit. Unlike those two, again, he has no new ideas. He has shown no use of sets to maximize the pluses of his players and minimize the minuses. Worse off, he has shown no in-game ability to make adjustments. Basically, we are looking at the version of the Texans' D in 2010 before Wade Phillips came along. The talent is there, it is growing slowly, but without a helmsman who can inspire confidence in his army with a steady hand and uncanny foresight, we're just going to be stuck in the mud for the few years we have McHale until our talent accumulates so much that we'll just have to hire a real coach to satisfy them. When that happens, McHale will be out, a good coach will be in, and our window will begin. Exactly like the Texans. As far as Sampson, I feel as though he has acquitted himself very well these past two weeks. If he returns to the sidekick role when McHale returns, then I bet he will be scooped up by a team looking for a head coach this offseason. He has more connections than McHale, is just as much an extravert and even better-liked by his players, and while he may not be the greatest X's-and-O's guys, I have witnessed a few instances where his in-game maneuvers have paid off.
I think Sampson and Mchale are both pretty bad at coaching the offense and setting lineups, but they do seem to get solid defensive results. I would like to hire a complete coach at some point, but I don't know who that would be. The Rockets seem to have a really hard time acquiring a guy like that. JVG was all defense, Adelman was all offense, now we're back to all defense again.
Such drama queens. Is it not possible these last few good games are a result of developing chemistry and learning the system better?
I feel bad for Sampson... getting bashed by fans all day. He didn't start the season intending to be a head coach - he's meant to be an assistant and I'm sure he would prefer it that way... And no he's not head coach material. If he's getting along with the players or whatever it's not like we will lose that when he shifts back into his role...
He interviewed for the head coaching position which was finally given to McHale. However the Rockets offered him to be part of the McHale's staff
So they haven't been talking before? http://blog.chron.com/ultimaterockets/2012/11/kevin-mchales-personal-situation-improving/
How has the defense improved? The defense was much better under McHale. Did you not watch the Utah and Lakers games?
You mean the first two games under Sampson? I'm talking about the last two when it looked like something clicked.
