    Hey guys,

Played a bit of footie last week and picked up an injury on my knee. It's my left leg, outside of the knee... kinda hurts when I twist and turn the joints. Any ideas? Have an appointment for friday now (as it has not gone away) and am a bit worried. I know some of you have had knee ops and the like... I was wondering what your injuries were like, where it hurt, etc. :(

    Cheers for any help.

I tore some cartilage in mine and it completely blocked movement. I was on my feet soon after surgery, but the day immediately following was hell even with painkillers. Took about three months for the little nagging pains to subside completely.

Good luck with yours! Hopefully it's nothing too serious.

i've torn my ACL's in both knees, along with a ****load of meniscal cartilage.

in my experiences, i definitely knew something was wrong after i blew my knees out. did you hear a pop or anything? if your only problems are a little pain when twisting your knee, i'll bet it's a sprain. hopefully.

if it's an ACL tear, i feel for you. it's a b**** of rehabilitation.

but, keep things in perspective. it's just your knee, nothing life-threatening.

I tore my ACL. It hurt a lot when it happened. After the pain went away, I tried to put weight on it a couple of times but there was no support and it was so wobbly that I could not stand.

My friend partially tore his ACL while skiing and was able to continue to ski. Afterwards, doctors advised/offered to reconstruct his ACL. I encouraged him not to and just go to physical therapy. He ended up not having the reconstructive surgery and is fine today.

Ace, it could be an ACL injury. Not necessarily a tear though. Just dont make any sudden movements with the leg until you get it checked out by the doctor. Until then, avoid lateral movement as much as possible. Good luck.

I've also torn both ACLs. Both times I knew the injury was serious more by what happened when it occured than what it felt like afterwards.

Did you hear a loud snap or pop? The first ACL I tore sounded like a twig snapping; the second sounded like a huge pop.

Also, like Mario said, the knee was very wobbly after it happened. It was obvious by how little weight it could bear that there was a serious injury.

Interestingly, though, it didn't hurt too much the first time. Didn't swell much either. Second time though, it hurt a lot and swelled up quite a bit.

Bottom line is that there's no way you're really going to know what's wrong until a professional takes a look at it, and even then it might take an MRI before you know for sure. No need to stress about it until then -- just make sure you take care of it (ice and elevate it a few times a day) before you see a doctor.

I also had a lot of success with Advil as a painkiller. That is, until after the surgeries and they gave me the good stuff. ;)

    Good luck.

Ace,you have to be precise when decribing the pain!
Where on your knee does it hurt?Front?Back?side?Which side?
Had my crossed ligaments(?) torn a few years back.Should have been operated but since I was living in Africa it was a no can do!
Now I'll probably go through my whole life with a (very)bad knee!
    :(

    hey guys,

thanks for the replies. footie = football = soccer. Sorry, I keep forgetting to switch vocab when posting on this BBS. ;)

Hmmm... let's see if I can describe it. Basically, when I just hurt it, when moving the knee it would feel as if grains were rubbing against each other within the knee. I could not put much weight on it but after a few minutes it was fine. Now I have a nagging pain, outside back of knee between the cartilage and bone (the little space within that). This is such a bad explanation, sorry!

I am not drawing any conclusions, nor am I doing anything crazy. Just curious right now!

    It does suck!

The second time, when I heard the pop and fell to the ground, I knew exactly what happened and yelled, "Not again!"

Everyone else on the court, of course, had no idea what I was talking about and thought I was nuts.

I have to say, though, the second time was much better than the first. Better surgeon, more aggressive rehab, etc. Better painkillers the first time, though. ;)

sounds like you tore the meniscus. those were the symptoms i was having except i could actually the feel the damn thing under my skin. kind of freaky...if you need surgery for it then don't be worried. when i had it done i was walking on it the same day.
