Jaime Escalante - inspiration for the movie Stand and Deliver dies Yes, hispanic... and sad. Oralé, Kimo sabe todo!! May you teach well in heaven, sir. Que En Paz Descanse, kimo. Orale, homes.
i guess none of his students never made it big enough to pay for his medical treatment? very good movie though.
RIP Jaime! That movie, and his story, is one of the inspirations for me going back to school to be a math teacher
Thank you very much for sharing that... I just sent it to one of my professors to share with a couple of our education classes.
That was a great, inspirational movie. Olmos was terrific playing this guy. Sorry to hear the real life guy passed. I still hate calculus with a vengeance, though. It would have been nice to do a "where are they now?" between him and his kids (the original ones)...to see how everyone turned out.

Edward James Olmos last week was on a morning show was REALLY praising Jaime Escalante very sympathetically. He was leading a charge gathering donations to prolong Escalante's life a little more so he can have a respectful exit... He claimed Stand and Deliver was the most watched movie ever in the US. Because every school in the nation plays it every year. I can see that.
I watched the movie last night. I hadn't seen it since early in high school and forget how good it is.
Olmos has been a supporter of Escalante since he did the movie, glad to hear he was still trying to help him until the end, doesn't surprise me though because Olmos is a pretty stand up guy. I agree about that Stand and Deliver notion as well.
