50 straight hours? I think at one time I had maybe like 18 hours straight. link Gamer's Death Sparks Concern in S.Korea Thu Aug 25, 7:41 AM ET SEOUL, South Korea - Keyboard and mouse in hand, he battled until nearly his last breath. The death of Lee, a 28-year-old man identified only by his last name who passed away earlier this month after nearly 50 straight hours of playing online computer games, has South Korea concerned about the health of the millions of gamers in the world's most wired country. ADVERTISEMENT Many of South Korea's 17 million gamers regularly stroll into Internet cafes, the $1-per-hour hangout popular among young South Koreans, and camp out in front of monitors to play for hours — and even sometimes days or longer. "I've seen people who play games for months, just briefly going home for a change of clothing, taking care of all their eating and sleeping here," said Jun Mung-gyu, 27, who runs an Internet cafe in southeastern Seoul. More than 70 percent of South Korea's population of 48 million uses the Internet, and the country has the highest per-capita rate of broadband connections in the world. With all that access has come the rising problem of Internet addiction.
Bull Crap..... Every few monts something like this comes up, and 50 hours would not kill anyone....can't you go up to 2 weeks without food and water? I call BS. DD
Without food, yes...without water, you'd die in a week, if you're lucky... A lot of people underestimate just how important sleep is for the human body...
I think this has already been discussed here in another thread. But the guy died from heart failure due to exhaustion.
What I have wondered, is did we evolve sleep, or is it simply an evolutionary weakness we'll eventually overcome.
Interesting, so you think people that sleep less will have more time to have sex, eventually outbreeding and therefore overtaking those who sleep more?
I think there are professional game players in South Korea. There are national and international game competitions, not sure how much are the prizes worth. One day gamer could be a profession just like pro basketball, I would like to have a video game channel on my cable.
I bet he was taking speed or something -- there has to be a contributing factor to his death. It is much easier to fall asleep than die.
Well, there is G4, although I guess they expanded into a games and racing channel by putting on drifting shows and a racing show that Fox canceled. Apparently they're also a dating advice channel for gamers seeking tips for love, at least on Thursdays. But G4 is probably the closest you'll get to a video game channel, at least for now. At least Icons, Cinematech, and few of their specials (the "Sex in Videogames" special was really good) are still good. And Call for Help with Leo and some of the gang is supposed to be coming back, although that's not really a gaming-specific show. And being a professional video game player probably is a good way to live, as long as you're good. I guess you won't making A-Rod type money, but I think you can probably get a few grand by winning a tournament, and there are tons of those. I think I read somewhere that Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel averages about $50,000 a year just from tournaments, and that's not counting any endorsements or other stuff he does. I imagine that these gamers will get more and more money as the market continues to expand. Although I think most of the tournaments are action type games (FPS, sports, racing, etc.) and not some of the genres of games that are getting people killed (MMORPG's, strategy games, etc.) In fact, I'm not even sure how you could even "win" a tournament with some of these games (mostly MMORPGs). I think some crappy MMORPG developer is promising $1 million for some player at next year's E3, although I forgot what they have to do.
