Just wondering if Kill Bill was playing as PG because he got 0 assist. The other question is; Is Rockets getting him as a backup PG?

I think Papaloukaus is their point guard. The team only had 10 assists total. World basketball is a different style of a similar game.

I wonder what any of the numbers mean. Yao has the highest average in the World Championship, but I doubt that he'll beat the NBA regular season PPG averages of Wade, James, Anthony, Nowitski and Gasol. Maybe Yao will beat out a few of them, but not all of them.

I think the best way to look at it is this: VSpan was able to contribute for Greece and will likely contribute for the Rockets too.

Basically, these fiba numbers won't translate to the NBA directly, but they still matter because it gives you a rough idea of how well a player can do against world class competition.

which means basically, if he had 11 points in a european game, he will make 15 at least in a NBA game...

Even though, as you said, the numbers won't translate to NBA directly but it is still kind of a concern if he is really playing as a PG for the Greece team even as a backup because he played for 27 minutes. That will be a lot worst if it is translated in NBA.

However, one game doesn't mean much to me but if he truly signed as a backup PG, he definitely need to improve his assists. On the other hand, I saw him played, he can really hustle and drive well. Wonder am I giving credit because he is now a Rockets? Mmm........... just making me think. ;)

Passing ability is the last thing we need to worry about with V-Span. Just watch him play. His shooting and (maybe) defense are another story.

You can't judge Spanoulis from team Greece games in WCOB. It's way a different game. Relying on team defence and offence. You might see a player contributing 26 points a day and 3 the next.

All is up to if the coach believes you're the proper material to play versus that opponent. Don't expect to see stars in that team, standing out constantly.

I wouldn't be at all worried about Spanoulis' assists at all. He has it. I wouldn't worry about his scoring either. That's for Tmac and Yao mostly. But versus China he surprised me with NBA range 3pointers and his drives were spectacular as always, make no mistake though, he's no Ginobili.

Defence, I don't know, considered good here, but NBA is different. Plus I don't know if he's more of a point, I think he's a playmaker mostly, which is Europe classification for one with a dual guard role.

But I can assure you he's a hard worker and a good character, and will work his butt off to be valuable for the team. The sooner he'll adjust to the NBA the better for all of us.

Exactly. This guy gives me a feeling of working his butt off in every game. He is the right piece for any team and will work especially well in this team like a dog with coach VGD and superstar M&M.

Look at what they've done per minute, and you'll get a clearer comparison. Also, Yao is going to get more points on his team because he's, by far, the number one option.

Here's a pace-adjusted per minute statistical rating for some of the NBA stars participating in the tournament:

    Code:
player team Gm MPG GS/g adjGS/40
    1 P. Gasol SPAIN 7 25.9 20.1 30.3
    2 Y. Ming CHINA 6 32.5 21.1 26.9
    3 C. Anthony USA 7 22.3 15.1 24.9
    4 D. Wade USA 6 20.5 13.5 24.2
    5 E. Ginobili ARGENTINA 7 21.7 11.9 22.1
    6 D. Nowitzki GERMANY 7 34.7 17.4 21.2
    7 L. James USA 7 22.4 11.0 18.0

If I remember right, they record assists differently in the European games. You really have to spoon feed a man to get an assist. In the NBA, the way they do it is much looser. Jose Calderon, the PG for the Toronto Raptors, only averaged 3 or 4 assists a game as a startign point in Spain's ACB and he's considered a pass-first PG.

I don't know if it's true for FIBA scoring, too.

Anyway, the good thing is that KillBill played a lot of minutes in a victory over a decent French National team with some NBA talent on it. We'll see how it translates when he plays under NBA rules against real NBA stars...

Yes, the way Europeans add assists, is only if a basket is scored immediately after you passed the ball. But there are also other factors, like that for the Spanish team, you need scoring also and in fast breaks, traditionally guards will go faster. They need his scoring as well, otherwise the other teams will stop guarding him well and focus more on Gasol or Garbajosa, etc.

Also, there are passes and passes, you could do any pass and then you could find a needle-wide space in the opponents defence and pass the ball through that to a sure basket. Spanoulis has that too.

Why is Parker not playing for the French team? Is he injured? I remember reading an arcticle in Sports Illustrated where he and Diaw thought they could win it all.
