...or what's on your kid's iPod. I've built a couple of good playlists for the kids, stuff I've downloaded or from my CD collection. The Witch is Dead: Ella Fitzgerald -If I Only Had a Brain- Abby Lincoln -Brightest Star: The Subdudes -If I had $1M: Barenaked Ladies -Amazing Grace: The Byrds ...because friend's don't let friends listen to Yanni...
I just downloaded Istanbul (Not Constantinople) by They Might Be Giants...that could be a song that kids like...catchy, good beat, and it teaches kids about geography... Old New York was once New Amsterdam
My kids love American Pie Blue Skies - Willie Black Water - Doobie Bros. Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day - Frank Black Sand Man & Horse With No Name - Americia Helpless - CSN&Y Where is my Mind - The Pixies The old lady who swallowed a spider - ? Puff the magic dragon - PPM Rocky Racoon - Beatles Happiness is a warm gun - Beatles (my wife hates that we sing this together in the car) Fast Car - Tracy Chapman Whip it - Devo There are more but I can't recall right now and I don't have my ipod with me.
This list might be for younger kids than whose tastes you are looking for. Esquivel has some great quirky music - very cartoony sounding. Carl Stalling Project Vol. 1 & 2 are also fantastic. He composed alot of the Looney Tunes orchestrations. Louis Prima's "Greatest Hits" is great bouncy music, he has an album where he covers Mary Poppins and also was one of the voices in Jungle Book.
Hearing Rosie Perez sing on "Go, Diego, Go!" always reminds me of her "work" in Do the Right Thing, so that's always nice ...
that wiggled and squiggled and wriggled in side her...Pete Seeger. My daughter love it. the beatles and CSNY tunes are good suggestions too.
VooDoo's list gives me hope for today's youth. Black Water, American Pie, Puff the Magic Dragon, and Rocky Raccoon? Awesome. Props for the TMBG crowd too. Eclectic music, but catchy.
Check out Greasy Kids Stuff the radio program on Saturday mornings. I don't know if it's on in Houston, but you can stream all of their old shows: http://www.wfmu.org/gks/
