Seems very defensive oriented and by watching him on TNT favors ball movement and player movement w/o the ball instead of iso and a traditional half court. I would think the current Mavs team would be his ideal Rockets.
In terms of Xs and Os, I think its TBD. He probably still has a lot to learn as far as that goes. He's a player's coach. Should have good relationship with his players, especially the younger ones. It seems to me like the Rockets believe a head coach doesn't necessarily have to be particularly good at actual coaching -- you know, game management, strategizing, calling plays -- so long as the assistant coaches are up to the task and he's willing to defer to them. They think other qualities -- leadership, building positive relationships with players and the rest of the organization, willing to work with young players -- is just as important.
Very good motivational coach. Preaches aggressive defense, plays a lot of straight-up man-to-man. His offensive schemes were much less complicated than Flip Saunders, less elaborate passing around the 3pt line. Likes his screen roll isos. Here's the one really good thing about McHale: You know how everyone always wants our big men to work with Hakeem? That's essentially what they're going to be getting in practice every day with McHale.
Makes sense, since that's basically what Landry said about RA, he hardly said anything when it came to coaching...I wonder if they would have gone with someone else had Finch not been interested in coming over just yet? I think we'll definitely see the same offense...not sure about the defense just yet, but i'm not as down about it as other folks around here.
If he tries to run this like the old Celtics, then expect one hell of a fast breaking team. Of course he'll need to find another Bird, another McHale, another DJ, another Ainge, etc, but I'm sure those grow on vines...
I posted this on one of the thread but it may be more appropriate for the question asked in this thread: http://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1114373 -- opinion from Minnesota fans on realgm
well i think the positive side of it is, he probably did a lot of learning when he was in Minnesota, so hopefully he brings over what he learned from the past and apply it now. hearing some of you saying he likes fast break, ball movement and player movement sounds like he can use some Adelman offense and if Finch is the assistant, i hope they run Adelamn offense but a beat of tweaks and modifications to make the team more efficient. however we are still lacking that shot blocking inside presence, if we can get Chandler we should be all set but then some here still feels we're gonna blow up this team and rebuild which i dont agree cos most of our players aside from Scola are very young players, we can build on the core we have right now
