He is going to the funeral on Friday anway. I hope this isn't the real reason he is showing up. Only he knows for sure.

WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry planned to pay his respects to Ronald Reagan on Tuesday as the former president's body lay in repose at the presidential library.

Kerry, who was flying to California to attend graduation ceremonies for his daughter, was scheduled to join other mourners in viewing the flag-draped casket, said Eric Nishimoto, a spokesman for the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.

Luis Vizcaino, a Kerry spokesman, said the candidate "hoped to visit while there. He's trying to work it into his schedule."

The period in which Reagan will lie in repose at the library in Simi Valley, a community northwest of Los Angeles, was scheduled to end Tuesday evening.

Although tens of thousands have waited in line for hours, officials at the library were expected to afford the presidential candidate the same courtesy given to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites) and his wife Maria Shriver, who paid their respects Monday without waiting.

Kerry suspended public campaign events this week in honor of Reagan, who died Saturday.

Reagan's death has shifted attention from the campaign to national mourning and commemorations of his historical and political legacy.

Kerry planned to attend the state funeral for Reagan on Friday at Washington's National Cathedral.

Maybe the article is not clear but what's the controversy? I don't have a problem with him paying his respects.

Especially when you deliberately change or delete the title of the article and then make an insinuation of ulterior motives.

"Kerry Plans to Pay Respects to Reagan"

I think it's a very classy move. Just like canceling all of his campaigning for the week in honor of Reagan.

Thanks. I agree. I imagine MANY senators will be attending, and I believe it would be odd for him to avoid this gathering.

So John Kerry shouldn't pay respects because Reagan was a Republican. Understood.

Even China, has now offically abandoned the label for "Crime in thought". It's shocking how everything changed in America. If you have to judge people, please base your judgement on facts and actions, not his/her idea or motives, because you would never know one's true motive behind certain action. Otherwise, people in this bbs might start to question your motivation for your contribution to all the new threads.

That goes a little beyond mere face time. Call it "wrapping yourself in someone else's legacy so nobody will examine your own record".

Wow Faos, you are really reaching these days aren't you? A senator goes to pay respects to a past president and you're trying to imply that is a bad thing? Liberal or Conservative, only a jackass would start a topic like this.

Typical calculated political move by John Forbes Kerry. Classic. I'd expect nothing less from the party that insults Ronald Reagan on his deathbed and immediately after his death (and Strom Thurmond), insults the efforts of a true patriot like Pat Tillman, likens George Bush to Saddam Hussein, compares Bush to Adolf Hitler, and even insults Nick Berg -- a man decapitated by terrorists. A truly classless display by a truly desperate group of charlatans.

I have no problem with him paying his respects. And he is planning to do so at the state funeral on Friday as he should. Today is just a chance for him to keep his face in public while the week long campaign is on hold. It's pretty obvious.
