WFAN in NY is reporting that the Astros have looked into trading Jeff Kent to free up money for Pettitte. Anyone else hear this? Does this mean that no one is taking Hidalgo?

haven't heard any rumor. However, i'd rather have a 27 year old Richard Hidalgo who has a cannon of an arm than 35 year old Jeff Kent if it came down to it.

Kent would be easier to trade than Hidalgo so it would not surprise me. Using their existing roster they would essentially be replacing Kent with Lane in the starting lineup and moving Biggio back to 2nd (it would truly surprise me if they traded Kent and kept Biggio in CF unless they received an ML 2B in the trade). Personally, I hope they keep Kent.

Trust the WFAN. Always trust the WFAN.

Unless -- Kent is being shopped to replace Boone/Henson...
If the Yanquis want him, the 'stros would have to cede him to the Boss.

I'm not opposed to this at all...not in the least...assuming we're doing it to make Pettite an offer he has a hard time refusing.

Maybe they'll give Chris Burke a shot.

I suspect that they would consider Biggio at 2B and Lane in CF better than Biggio in CF and Burke at 2B (at least in 2004), again, assuming they would fill these positions with current players on their roster.

Again, am I the only person here who thinks Pettite is overrated? I don't see him as someone you should basically dismantle your entire team for (Wagner, Hidalgo/Kent). I know he's great in the postseason, but for a guy who had an ERA higher than Tim Redding last year, the Astros really look to be putting all their eggs in the wrong basket. Anything more than $10million is too much.

Keep Hidalgo, move Biggio to 2nd, and pick up a speedy guy for CF.

    Center Fielder
    Biggio
    Bagwell
    Hidalgo
    Berkman
    Ensberg
    Everett
    Ausmus

    Piching Staff
    Oswalt
    Pettite
    Miller
    Redding
    Robertson

    Bullpen
    Dotel
    Lidge

Is that a World Series team?

I've learned, i don't call any astros team a world series team. I thought Johnson, Reynolds, Lima, Wagner, Hampton, Biggio, Bagwell, and Alou were a world series team

But, the lineup you put out there is a playoff team, no doubt.

I'd settle for a team that gets out of the NLDS for once if you want the truth...and then go from there.

Yeah, everyone wrote them off because they didn't have enough power hitting. Nobody thought speed and contact hitters like Pierre and Castillo would have such a big impact.

That's one reason I want that speedy guy at CF more than a Pettite or Clemens. Let's get solid players at every postion and make ourselves an all- around deep team instead of getting a few stars that worsen our salary situation.

I'm with you. I really don't get it. Why be so patient with Redding and then get rid of him when he is finally getting "it"? (rumors) Hernandez is coming back. We don't need another bad contract. It seems to me that when we need hitting the Astros go after pitching and when we need pitching the Astros go after hitting. To me, we have two professional hitters and the rest of the guys basically get fat on the lesser pitchers in the league. To me, Kent and Berkman, legitimate contact hitters that can battle the big boys, are the keepers and everyone else can go. I used to be a big fan of Hidalgo but the guy has not learn to take away pitches the opposite field.

Say NO to Pettite, Say NO to Ausmuss, Say YES to BUCK and another bat.

O, Miller, Redding, Rosario, Hernandez, Duckworth... We have the starters, we need speed, defense, one more reliever and a left handed stick.

He's not ready yet. He needs at least one year at AAA before being called up. Maybe a Sept. call up for next year.

I think he's overrated. Maybe if we still kept 2/3rd of those players i would do it

This is what I'd like to see happen this offseason..

1st sign mike cameron please!!! he would be an awesome FA pickup.

2nd trade Kent to the yankees(they are more than a little upset with Alfonso Soriano right now) I doubt we could get AS for Kent but would be a nice trade off for move #3..

3rd Sign Andy Pettite super please!!

    4th resign ausmus

other than that i think we are definetly a playoff team

    Lineup
    1.cameron
    2.soriano
    3.bagwell
    4.berkman
    5.hidalgo
    6.ensberg
    7.everett
    8.ausmus
    9.pitcher

    rotation of
    1.Oswalt
    2.Pettite
    3.Miller
    4.Carlos Hernandez
    5.Redding

    bullpen

    lidge

Anyone else find it interesting that Clemens filed for free agency the other day?

If Kent is traded to free up more money, could it be possible if we sign sign Pettitte, Clemens would follow?

That's a terrible lineup. We would wiff about 15-20 times a game. Probably set the record for SOs by All-Star break. One left handed stick does not work. We proved it. Besides, do you thnk Biggio would really accept being on the bench.

Considering that Richard Hidalgo hit roughly .200 in clutch situations...no thanks.
