he seems to know his stuff on tnt, think he'd make a good coach in the nba? what about elie, think he'll ever go from assistant to head coach?
Kenny Smith wouldn't make a good NBA coach. Elie seems like he would be a good head coach, he's said he would like to be one. Not sure if he ever will, but he should follow what AJ did.
Kenny, can't see him doing coaching. I'm not saying he won't, just saying, I think he and Chuck are the best pre/post game show on any basketball level. Sometimes they really do have insightful stuff to say, but for the most part, they just screw around, have fun, make fun of each other and everyone in the league. It's great. I do think the Elie will be a head coach someday. I'm not saying next year or anything, but I think in the next 5, he'll be one of those "hot assitsants coaches" that gets a job (i.e. Mussleman, Johny Davis, Avery Johnson, both Van Gundys, and this year Mike Brown). He is really firey and will get on people. He knows the game well. Another thing that will help Elie was that he was a role player. How many GREAT players were good coahes?? 0. I don't count Larry Bird, because players ROUTINLY said that Rick Carlise was the coach of that team (another great example for me). Bird and Magic are the two that stand out the most in my mind. They were HOF, but they couldn't understand why there players (while they were coach) couldn't play up to that kind of level, and had trouble relating to those players. However, a guy like Rick Carlise(IMHO, the best coach in the L), Don Nelson(and now Avery Johnson), Paul Silas and others were never GREAT players. Carlise hardley even played. But they KNOW the game very well, and can understand all players on all levels ( I mean, look at what Carlise did this year with the Pacers).
Lenny Wilkens Tommy Heinsohn (though he's a lousy analyst) Bill Sharman Billy Cunningham Larry Brown, Rudy T, Mo Cheeks, Jerry Sloan, and Terry Porter were all all-stars in their careers as players, though most wouldn't characterize them as great (personally, I think Terry Porter was a great player in his prime... There was about a 5-year period when he was with the Blazers that he averaged 17-8).
Funniest thing I've ever heard a pro athlete say: Terry Porter, asked why he had recently begun shaving his head, said, "Because I have a receiving hairline."
yeah that guy whose in the HOF as a player and a coach (and also had the mos W's and L's in NBA history) was pretty good I guess. Now were those other guys great? Well, as you have said, they were all-stars, though some would debate "greatness." I've never seen any of them play - I'm only 20, so I'll take your word for it. But, I'm really refering to guys who are DEFINATE hall of famers. Lenny Wilkens is definatly a great example. But the others are up for debate. I can't really argue them however.
I pretty much agree with the consensus at this point. I think Kenny Smith would suck as a head coach, and Elie might be a good/average one. Though I think Kenny would get a chance before Elie would, just cuz he's more in the limelight.
I dont think Kenny would make a good head coach...hes a good analyst but I doubt he could deal with the pressure and egos of head coaching...Elie, on the other hand, would make a nice coach because he was a leader on the floor and was vocal and demonstrative, even while playing with such legends as Hakeem and Clyde...Kenny always seemed to take a backseat and let others lead; he was mostly a follower...
Was Maurice Cheeks considered great? I know he was a good player but he was a little before my time. He is a good coach but was in a terrible situation in Portland.
Hopefully Le$ didn't piss him off too much. As a former player with championship experience, Mario Elie would be a nice fit in a couple of years...
maybe, maybe no Kenny seems sort of self centered. I don't think the players would respect him. Now Elie on the other hand would demand and get respect. Of course that's just my opinion.
I thought John Lucas was a decent coach. Kenny Smith has a good basketball mind and he's articulate. I think he'd do fine as a coach.
