SEATTLE — Seattle Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu says Ken Griffey Jr. is retiring.

Wakamatsu made the announcement before Wednesday night's game against Minnesota. Griffey's retirement is effective immediately.

The 40-year-old Griffey was one of baseball's greatest players before injuries began to take their toll. The perennial All-Star outfielder ranks fifth on the career home run list with 630.

Griffey was hitting only .184 this season and recently went a week without playing.

First ballot Hall of Famer but his last 3 years have been pretty terrible.

Greatest swing ever imo. Loved watching that man hit and loved playing as him in baseball games over the years.

Baseball says goodbye to "The Kid."

If not for the injuries he'd have the record. One of the greatest!

In the 90's he was up there with Jordan in terms of popularity. I wasn't a baseball fan at all, but loved watching and reading up on Ken Griffey. Had most of his rookie cards and autograph bat at one point.

Should have been the all time leading HR leader had it not been for injuries. He was one of my favorite players growing up.

I still remember the project I did about him in Elemantary school...

    Best swing ever!

What a sad day for baseball. First Joyce's call and then The Kid retires.

I was 12 when he first came into the league and had the pleasure of following him through his prime...what an amazing player he was. It was such a shame that he had all of those leg injuries in Cincinnati. What a perfect swing he had.

I also respect the fact that he didn't cheat and actually aged the way players do in their late 30's as opposed to players like Bonds.

One of the best ever. It was definitely time. Had the prettiest swing and some of the most incredible defensive plays. One of my favorite non-Astro players of all time. He's just a tick below Kirby Puckett for me. I pulled for him even when he was a Red...mostly because the Reds weren't a threat with or without him against the Astros.

    Smoothest swing in baseball.

Loved watching him and Jim Edmonds swing the bat.

Griffey was 100hr's ahead of Bonds at one point in spite of the fact that Bonds began his career 3yrs before Griffey. That should say something about how good he was before the injuries.
