Kelvin Cato has been an albatross around the necks of everyone involved with the Houston Rockets ever since the day he signed that ridiculous (in hindsight) contract for 6 years and $42 million. The fans get to watch him laze around the basket, dropping rebounds out of bounds (if they come to him), committing obvious fouls and then getting "T'd up" for arguing about them, and spending the time when he should be practicing flirting with cheerleaders instead. The coaches get to endure his sorry work ethic and his cell phone during team meetings. Management, meanwhile, gets to deal with the huge contract he is busily not earning. FINALLY, though, it seems that Cato will be heading on to his next soon-to-be-disappointed fan base.

The Rockets have offered Kelvin Cato and any combination of draft picks it will take to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for their top draft pick. This would be sufficient to land us Duke's Shane Battier, who would replace Shandon Anderson in the lineup.

As a side note: The Spurs are looking to replace Sean Elliott, who is likely to retire, and Shandon's name has come up. The question is whether or not the Spurs are willing to pay what Shandon is asking. The Rockets are not.

Moving Cato would also help us as we search the free agent market for a center. Marc Jackson is interested, Dale Davis is said to be available, and there is a rumor that Jayson Williams (who left the Nets for religious reasons) is going to play next season. Any of these would serve fine as a replacement for or backup to Hakeem. At $5.33 million, Cato makes about what the Rockets are willing to offer Hakeem for next season.

    More as it is available!

I thought Jayson Williams left the Nets because of injuries. What were his religious reasons for leaving?

Jayson Williams didn't leave for religious reasons, he left because his leg wasn't healing properly, and fast enough at the time. In fact, Jayson Williams felt bad for signing that big contract of his and tried hard to come back. But when it didn't heal properly he donated a good deal of money to charities and non-profit organizations throughout the New York and New Jersey area.

I should add, it wouldn't surprise me if Chicago seriously considered Houston's deal. The Draft doesn't have any impact players, and all the #4 pick would give Chicago is a player that would come off the bench, or would be a decent fill in at the SF spot or something. Chicago wanted Cato badly last year, which was a big reason why the Rockets locked him up. Chicago would take a chance, I believe, or Cato and his upside, an athletic shot-blocking center, who is locked up, and draft picks to boot, if it meant getting rid of the #4 pick I believe. With Cato's former college coach in Chicago, I guess they believe he could turn Cato around. That's just my thoughts.

I thought it was Bison Dele that left for religous reasons. Jayson Williams did leave for medical reasons. It's a shame that a Rocket Fan with an outlet for rumors consistently screws up the facts.

I didn't know he gave up some money because he felt bad about signing a big money contract. That's cool of him. Too bad I can't say the same for Cato. He just feels bad when has to play basketball.

As if I needed another reason to believe that Bill the Rocket guy was full of ****. Not even Krause is stupid enough to trade their #4 pick for Cato and some draft picks. And Jayson Williams has said specifically that he is not coming back - it would be financially crazy for him to do so, even if his body would cooperate.

You are right concerning Bison Dele (used to be Brian Williams) "retiring" due to religious reasons.

He obviously must've gotten Jayson and Brian Williams' names confused.

Oh, and that deal with Chicago sounds WAY too good to be true.

Jayson Williams had been rumored to be returning about two months ago. KVH was even quoted in an interview saying he was working out. His lawyer however threw water on his come back attempt because a come back would have caused him to forfeit a sizable portion of his insurance settlement.
Knowing the source the story is probably bogus, but if it is true we should try to get Brad Miller as part of the deal as well as their second round pick which could be used on Morris

I think it sounds fair for both sides...The Bulls get Cato, a potential shot blocking center to play alongside Brand, and the Rockets get the 4 pick.

The last thing the Bulls need is more rookies, it seems a fair trade and not too much of a risk either way, as both teams could benefit.

There's a difference between "a potential shot blocking center" and a "center who's never lived up to his potential". One is a mystery, the other is a known quantity. Thought of another way, why would we trade away such a great shot-blocking-potential-having center? Hell, we could use him. Nothing like a mobile shot blocking center roaming around in the middle of a zone.

If we can get the #4 for Cato (and ONLY Cato) I'll... I'll... well, hell, I don't know what I'd do. [IMG]

Now if they say Cato + relief from all those #1 draft pick shackles we have on that organization, then it may seem more realistic...

The Hawks have said to be locked on Battier so he will be gone at #4. So if the top 3 go as the following: Curry, Brown, Battier then you know who the Rockets will end up with [IMG] CD please find a way to pull this off.

It doesn't sound too crazy to me, but for different reasons. Chicago has found out that they can't sign free agents because of their management. This trade would allow the Rockets to get a #4 pick, get out from under Cato's contract and it would give Chicago 4 good players.

In the future Houston can sign their role players via free agency and Chicago can draft theirs (which is the only way they will be able to).

I believe it, unless Chicago has such a big head from those chapionships that they still believe players want to go there.

This what I'll do... Trade #13, #18 and Cato to Chicago for the #4 overall and Miller. Trade Miller for Marc Jackson in a Sign and Trade. Rockets top 3 Draft choices are #1 Battier, #2 Curry, #3 Chandler, whose all might fall to the fourth spot. I'll take Battier since we have Marc Jackson. at #23 I'll draft Gilbert Arenas. Also resgin Mo Taylor.

    New line up.
    Francis-Mooch
    Cat-Arenas
    Jackson-Collier
    Battier-Langi
    Taylor- Thomas

    Toog, that won't happen.

There is no way they'll do all of that. I think Krause is a sucker for draft picks and that he would take that. I don't think Jackson will ask for a lot of money, and that he'll sign straight up with a team. If he knew anything, he'd end up in the East where he'd be an all-star.
