We've played 30 games. Kelvin Cato has missed 24 of them. Why, you ask? Because of a sprained ankle. Something tells me he's really out because of a broken nail and he's using the ankle as an excuse. Steve Francis said a few games ago that "a sprained ankle isn't going to keep me out of a game". Sometimes I wonder why we didn't sign Pig Miller for 42 mil.

So how do you"really feel? [IMG]
I say trade Cato! Even if he turns into a good player (he will never play well consistantly) somewhere else it will not happen here. Lets see what we can get for him. Some idiot GM will take a chance with him.

Actually it's a HIGH ankle sprain, and those are the worse to rehab correctly. A High ankle sprain is far worse then a normal ankle sprain, and some doctors even say that it could be as bad as a broken ankle or other injury to an ankle because you just don't know how a high ankle sprain will respond. It isn't like Francis' ankle sprain, trust me if Francis had a high ankle sprain you wouldn't see him for weeks. . .

    RocksMillenium is right.

Brian Grant, when asked about his high ankle sprain, said that it was one of the most painful injuries he ever suffered.

Brian Skinner of the Clippers suffered a high ankle sprain last year that kept him out the whole year.

A high ankle sprain is a serious thing.

A high ankle sprain is FAR more serious than what we "commoners" consider a sprained ankle.

If you want to learn more about it, check out this article as it explains it very well and dismisses some of the fallacies of it being "just another sprain" :

    High ankle sprain a pain
Jaguars know too well that healing takes time

    By Mike Stobbe
    Times-Union staff writer

James Hamilton twisted his ankle during a preseason drill, and it surprised him.

The Jaguars' rookie linebacker never had sprained an ankle. But he saw other football players get them, get taped up, and go back on the field.

So he was surprised to feel pain from the shin on down, not just the ankle. And he was surprised that after the ankle was taped, he still could not walk on it, let alone practice.

''I had seen a lot of people, like Natrone [Means, a Jaguars running back], he had a bad ankle sprain one time and he was back running on it. I thought I'd be back like that too,'' Hamilton said.

''But it just wasn't like that, because it was a high ankle sprain.''

    Hobbling Jaguars

A high ankle sprain is different from the ankle sprain familiar to many weekend warriors. It involves a different part of the lower leg, occurs in a different way and is considered much more serious.

It is an injury the Jaguars are unhappily familiar with this season. Four Jaguars have been sidelined with the injury, including:

Hamilton, who was injured in August.

Quarterback Rob Johnson, injured in the first regular-season game, Aug. 31 against Baltimore. He missed the next three games.

Means, who had ankle sprains before but sustained his first high ankle sprain in the Oct. 12 game against Philadelphia. He missed the next two games.

Offensive tackle Tony Boselli, who got a high ankle sprain during last Sunday's game against Tennessee. He is expected to be out two to three weeks.

It is a frustrating injury,Jaguars players said, because of the pain. Frustrating because of the amount of time it takes to recover. And frustrating because the victim sometimes is questioned by people who hear ''ankle sprain'' and assume it's not that bad.

Even players who understand leg and ankle injuries can seem impatient.

Johnson recalled that quarterback Mark Brunell, who was out with a knee injury at the time, was trying to help motivate Johnson's recovery. But the ligament just wouldn't heal.

''It was kind of tough because Mark was out there trying to get me back in a week, and that made it real frustrating,'' Johnson said. ''It's not like a normal sprain. It just doesn't come back. It takes a long time.''

    Different sprains

A sprain is a stretching or tearing of ligament, which is the white slightly elastic tissue that connects bones and prevents excessive movement of the joint.

A common ankle sprain involves the anterior talofibular ligament, which is a small ligament on the outside of the ankle. That ligament is generally injured when the ankle is turned in, said Stephen Lucie, a Jaguars team physician.

A high ankle sprain is something of a misnomer, in that most of the damage occurs above the ankle, said Jim DeOrio, an orthopedic surgeon at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville.

Instead, that involves a stretching or tearing of the interosseous ligament. That's the ligament that fans between the tibia and fibula, which are!the bones that run the length of the lower leg.

It can also involve damage to other ligaments around the ankle, DeOrio said.

In this injury, the foot is planted and the body and leg rotate to the side. The force causes the tibia and fibula to separate, with a stretching or tearing of the ligaments connecting them.

That damage can occur where the two leg bones connect to the ankle area and/or can run up the side of shin, DeOrio said.

''It feels like everything from your shin down is just messed up,'' Hamilton said.

These injuries seem to occur more to professional football players than to amateur athletes, partly because more weight and velocity is involved in the pro game. The artificial turf that carpets some pro stadiums seems to be a factor in some high ankle sprains too, Lucie said.

The immediate treatment involves immobilizing and taking weight off the lower leg and ankle. Players are typically put into casts or ''boots'' (removable short-length casts).

They rehabilitate by jogging in a swimming pool, running, applying ice and learning again to put weight on the ankle and cope with the pain and swelling, doctors said.

It is not unusual for a player to be out of action for two to six weeks, Lucie said.

''It can be a season ending injury,'' DeOrio said.

    Recovering

Standard sprained ankles can be severe, too. But it's not unheard of for minor and even not-so-minor standard sprains to be taped up and the player sent back in the game.

That's what happened with Means last season in the AFC Championship game in New England.

But the high ankle sprain of last month was a different experience, Means said.

''When I first had it, I actually thought my ankle was broken. It's very painful. You can't put any pressure on it,'' he said.

Means and Johnson said they both still feel pain from their high ankle sprains, but are dealing with it.

Hamilton's case suggests that time will heal their wounds.

When asked about his injury during a locker room interview Thursday, Hamilton smiled and looked down at his sneakered feet.

''Actually, I was sitting around the other day and I couldn't remember which ankle it was,'' he said.

I had a high-ankle sprain in June and I couldn't play for a long while . . . sometimes it's still a bit sore after I do a lot of exercise on it . . . at first I couldn't walk on it at all, but within a few days I was limping, but I limped badly for over a week . . .

I just wanted to highlight that passage from the post Doc made so that people realize what Cato is up against. You're not just going to tape up that ankle, roll the basketball out and say "there you go Cato, lets ball!" This is a serious injury!
