Did K-Dwy hie for the ESPN shop? http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-26-55/Monday-Zephyrs.html Say it ain't so, Kel.
The link is for True Hoop, an ESPN column/notes. Kelly Dwyer, avowed hatah of ESPN, appears to have crossed over to ESPN's stable.
truehoop is a blog by henry abbott that espn picked up a few months ago. its probably the best daily basketball read on the internet. and kelly did a solid job filling in, kudos to him.
Dunno about you guys but if I had the choice to get my name known I would sure as hell do it regardless of if its ESPN
For two years in the early 90s, I actually lived in the same town Dan Patrick did growing up -- Mason, Ohio. Crazier, my friend Jon lived in the house that belonged to Dan's grandparents. Crazy-azier, we were messing around in Jon's attic one day when we found 2nd grade homework from little "Danny Pugh," which is Patrick's real name. Just drawings and handwriting exercises and such. Also, a Dinah Washington 78. Craziest, and most entertaining to Jon I'd guess, was the late 70s-era Penthouse he found under the grate and off to the side in a heating duct in one of the bedrooms. Now, Patrick never actually lived in that house, but still ... ESPN has hired me to do some work in Henry's absence. SI.com and I couldn't come up with a financial agreement that would allow me to keep writing without having to be poor, so we amicably parted for now. There's just no precedence on that site for a guy coming in under the dot com tag to move into the big time at SI or SI.com. You have to come in from the magazine side, and be 50. If nothing turns up beyond this TrueHoop run, I might have to call it a day with the whole sportswriting gig -- I'm 27 and can't live like this forever. But, so far, it's been a lot of fun. I hope editors, somewhere, can note that the amount of output I put together in the dregs of the NBA calender (July 13th and 16th) will only get better where there are nine games on the night before, or the trade deadline's coming up, etc.
Good luck. And I'm glad you're out from under SI. You are no longer tagged in my mind with a soccer cover and mountains of Knicks Championship editions already published. I can now enjoy your writing without the baggage.
Your line of work sounds interesting and it would be awesome if you could do it until you retire. Hopefully your window will open up way before you're 50. I enjoy reading your work it would be a shame if you decide to hang it up so soon. What other stuff are you considering if you do decide to move on from sportswriting? Become a journalist for a big time mag or newspaper?
Krazy Kelly A good writer today needs...face TVime. Write a book and get on Oprah. In any event, best of luck - and don't give up. Don't ever give up!
Who cares if hes with ESPN or SI. The analysis is still brilliant. Good call on Magloire. I saw him play for a few games with the hornets in New Orleans and if he wasn't getting the ball then he wasn't going to play any defense or rebound. I liked the clip at the end also. Rik Smit's mullet is money!!!
I wish you the best Kelly. Hoepfully this wont affect the chats that we all have here on clutchfans during the season.
Uh, Kelly perhaps? BTW - (Mags needs some 'Magic'!) The Showtime Lakes' success IMHO was de facto promulgated by Magic getting everyone a basket before he'd shoot, and generally no one with two hoops. He ensured that everyone 'got into the game'. It was part of his genius, part of what placed him forever in the pantheon of basketball gods.
Kelly, it may be time to start your own business. For every $100,000 of income you just need to set up a Rockets blog and sell 5,000 annual $20 subscriptions. Put me down for a subscription.
Well Kelly, thanks to that post I can now take CNNSI.com out of my bookmarks. Bring back OnHoops man! Grandmama needs you.
