Kelly and Harbaugh Interviewing With Notre Dame

    By PETE THAMEL
    Published: December 7, 2009
The head coaching vacancy at Notre Dame will most likely be filled this week.

Notre Dame’s athletic director, Jack Swarbrick, is scheduled to meet or has met with Cincinnati Coach Brian Kelly and Stanford Coach Jim Harbaugh, a person briefed on the search said. The meetings are taking place in New York City, where many coaches and administrators are visiting for end-of-season gatherings.

Kelly’s interview, which was first reported by ESPN.com, will take place Tuesday. He filmed his television program in Cincinnati on Monday morning and will arrive in New York on Tuesday.

While Kelly was regarded as the leading candidate, Harbaugh’s name is a little more surprising. When reached on his cellphone Monday afternoon, Harbaugh did not deny the meeting.

“Not now or not in the future will I talk about any other jobs or opportunities,” he said. “I’m out recruiting right now.”

Harbaugh is expected to be in New York this week for the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame induction. He cut short an interview and asked that further questions be directed through the sports information director at Stanford.

RT @CoachBrianKelly: Just informed our team that Notre Dame has contacted me and I will listen to what they have to say.

i think kelly is going to notre dame. kelly has been harping since he got to UC for a practice facility and better facilities overall. ND has money, and they have a brand new practice facility that is supposed to be the best in the country. it wouldnt have surprised me if kelly sometime this year asked about what the future holds in cincy, they prob told him they were unsure and cant commit. ND will offer to much for him to turn down.

I had heard Randy Edsall's name, too (UCONN coach). He might have already interviewed.

Why don't they spice things up and go after Jimmie Johnson? That trumps one all of these little program success story guys. I guess maybe they learned a lesson?

After watching Kelly's interview on the Bowl Special lastnight, it really sounds like he'll leave if offered the ND job. I expect him to be the next HC at ND, I think its a good pick up for them too.
