His mistakes beyond picking players and saying he could make a player out of Carr have been minor. Much is made of his clock managment and timeout/challenge use but no one would care about those if it was not for Rosencopter and the other 30 interceptions by the QB's. Seriously is it his fault Sage and Matt throw to the other team? Isn't the GM the one supposed to go down for personel decisions?
I'm not bothered by the offense much. Sage is what he is, and I am inclined to believe that a significant portion of the mistakes we've seen could be plausibly attributed to increased risk-taking on offense because of lack of faith in the defense. Heck, even Sage can manage this offense to decent production when he isn't asked to be Superman and the run game is effective -- for evidence, see yesterday's game up until the dying moments. These guys have proven they are capable of putting up enough points on the board to win games. The problem is that the defense can't ever get off the field to save their lives. The Baltimore game was the perfect storm for this disastrous scenario: our running game was severely impacted by Slaton's unavailability, the defense couldn't stop the run and got lit up by a middling rookie QB, and Sage was forced into faux-Superman failcopter mode again. The stats tell us that this is one of the most offensively potent teams in the league. The defense has been a complete, unqualified disaster. Smith has got to go, and the organization needs to re-evaluate its personnel decision making on that side of the ball completely.
I think Kubiak deserves one more year (as does, I suppose, Schaub). However, I and many others were b****ing about clock management and play calling *LONG* before the Rosenfumble incident. He needs to improve. Statim.
Did I miss something? Is his job in jeopardy because fans want him out, or is it because the owner has put him on the hot seat? any link?
I believe this to be the logical next step. However, the words "logic" and "Texans" usually don't coexist...unfortunately. I'm so upset this team is still a disaster...
Or they could just hire a "defensive" guy has head coach. Schottenheimer is a defensive guy. So is Cowher. I've always thought its easier to have a defensive guy as head coach mainly because defense isn't as straight-forward to coach as offense. You have to instill an ideology, a tenacity, a passion that goes far beyond simple X's and O's. Then, you can also oversee the offense with the standpoint that if your defense was preparing to go up against them, what would they need to really "scare" the opposition. Jeff Fisher and Belichick have always taken this approach to coaching their teams... even though they were maily defensive coordinators, they were very much involved in how the offense was structured, and what sort of gameplan they had going into each week. Jimmy Johnson was also the same way. On the flip-side, an offensive coach has his hands all over the offense (sometimes moreso than the defensive guys handle the defense)... and often simply lets the defensive coordinators handle their side without much input or game-plan decision making.
Does Kubiak still handle all the playcalling on the offensive side? Last year it bugged me he would go 3 and out with all runs. Now its 3 and out with all passes. He challenges the wrong plays, ignores the obvious ones, and goes for it on 4th down a bit much, though not as bad as last year. He's a cowboy coach, stubborn about his methods and who he keeps.
And a new GM. Seriously. It's tough to model your team after the Denver Broncos when your QB doesn't even resemble John Elway's redheaded stepson. This team needs to spend it's next 3 first round draft picks on offensive linemen.
My understanding is that Kubiak has the biggest say with regard to personnel decisions....not our GM. I don't know if I want him gone or not....I waffle on it.
I can honestly say I wouldn't care either way. Kubes has done little to impress me. At the same time the Texans have done little to get better talent wise. Keep em or lose em, I wouldn't lose any sleep.
giving up the house for schaub was kind of stupid, but overall I don't think personnel is a problem for this regime. we know amobi is young, so you have to give him time. slaton is a wonderful pick. mario was right pick, d brown, work in progress. i think people have been a little hard on him. jacoby jones, owen daniels, zach diles, eric winston, this team has found some keepers.
There are holes all over the place to the extent that we don't have a single positional unit that is consistent, dominant, or even possesses an identity. Whats our forte? Tight end?
I think they have some holes to fill, so personnel is a bit of a problem--but I agree with you that they've found some keepers and personell isn't near the problem it was in 2005.
Doesn't his contract end after next season? He'll be a lame duck unless he gets an extension, and how can he retain the respect of the team without one?
He really would make a great coach for Tennessee. He would have top QB prospects flocking to him for pro grooming every year. Maybe his agent should look into that. If what you say about his contract status is true.
The fact is this is his 3rd year and he still makes boneheaded game and clock management decisions consistant with a rookie coach. I don't know if he should be fired this year or not, but what I do know is that I am tired of the Texans being out coached every game.
