I've noticed every time Dwight gets the ball he goes to the SAME spin move to the lane. Either that or he goes baseline for the reverse layup which he either misses, gets blocked or fouled (then proceeds to brick the free throws). Where the hell is Howard's jump hook? Out of all the moves he could've taken from working with Hakeem, I'm a little baffled why he hasn't developed this. Its the easiest way to score without taking a pounding. Plus, he can use the spin move as a counter later in the game to keep the defender off balance. Dwight would be DEADLY if he would simply backdown with 3 dribble, turn & jump hook. I've always thought Dwight makes it WAY to hard on himself to score. The fact he's good with either hand would seriously put his defender at a serious disadvantage. Thoughts?
Dwight's best move is an uncontested Dunk... watching im every day now thats hes a rocket.. I knew yao was better i just didnt think he was LIGHT years ahead of dwight. Shaq made a good point the other night hes not looking to duck inside for easy looks gotta get some easy ones big guy
I agree with this thread! His post moves are so easy to predict and it seems he didnt learn anything from Hakeem at all. I bet even Greg Smith or Asik can do those. IMO, Dmo has better post moves than dwight.
i hate to say this, but just look at DMOs post moves and footwork compared to dwight's. If only dwight can post up like dmo.
You guys realize Laker and Magic fans have been saying this the whole time? Hahahah, look at my post history. Dwight is who he is. Asking him to be more is just getting your hope ups. Just ask for 15 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Thats the thing. Him developing a jump hook isn't asking too much, its simply fundamentals being a big man. He makes the game too difficult trying to outmuscle his opponents. Just flip the freakin ball up over your defender. All that unnecessary stuff gets Dwight in foul trouble
Ideal Howard should not take more than 2 dribbles in the post... when he catch either he shoots or pass... all within 2 dribbles...
How long has Dwight been in the league? 9 years? You're suppose to develop your post moves aka fundamentals in your 1st-3rd years. After that, it's just fine-tuning. If he has no post moves now, he's never going to develop it.
He needs to shoot his 10ft faceup jumper after doing a Sikma pivot. That shot will hone his touch for more complex shots (fadeaways, turnarounds, step backs)--not that he would do any of these in games very often but maybe we can hope. There is video footage of him learning a quick jump hook from Hakeem, but he's not applying it to games. I think he might need game simulation in practice and be allowed to fail a few times until he gains confidence.
So you guys are not satisfied with 18 points, 15 rebounds and 2 blocks a game? He was 7/11 from the field last game. He is still much better than Asik offensively.
I don't think anyone jumped into this thinking Dwight has reached his ceiling. I hoping there is still some room for improvement.
no one comes close using the sky hook to kareem, if dwight is pretty serious he could learn it just by watching a lot of old LA Lakers films. The skyhook really would be effective for Dwight, and since he is already using a hook (albeit of the running variety), it should be peanuts for him. But I am also wondering why I don't see more of this in-game. And also, Shaq developed a baby hook in his prime with the lakers and continued to use it until his retirement as he wasn't that mobile anymore (plus he gained a lot of weight lol). I figure a baby hook could help Dwight as well. Especially if Dwight learns to shoot it on both hands. Dwight would be unstoppable down low.
At this point in his career he isnt going to change. Ive been saying this for the longest that the Rockets didnt need Dwight Howard they needed a guy that can score in the post and create his own shot/force a double but Dwight Howard is the more appealing player compared to Asik who had a great year for us last year. Hakeem The Dream stated this summer that Dwights post game is "high schoolish". If the God of the post cant teach you then youre just a loss cause. Watching Dwight makes me miss/appreciate Yao Ming so much more, the way he came in a learned to become dominant in the post. The other day I was watching the Rockets Jazz game via Jazz broadcast, thought Matt Harpring seemed to target Dwight for everything he did but he was speaking the truth. Dwight is an amazing athlete but lacks the skill. We love dunks and alleys but we dont like simple hook shots, Dwight sells tickets but he wont win you a championship. We should have went after a scoring 4 instead of Dwight IMO
The point is Dwight has the capabilities to develop a hook. But for some reason has never applied it to his game. He's never going to get a dreamshake like Hakeem. But why hasn't he tried backing down 2-3 dribbles and giving the defender a fundamentally sound hook? He'd score 6-10 more points a game and actually save himself the pounding of trying to muscle hhis way to the rim every time. Shouldn't McHale or somebody on the coaching staff tell him this???
