I'm not exactly sure why I'm starting this thread, but I'm just curious if other people feel the same way I do. Immediately after Hurricane Katrina hit I thought it was such an awesome thing that our city of Houston really stepped up to the plate and provided for so many people displaced by the storm. But with the escalating crime rates our city has seen since then, and the numerous reports of abuse of the provided assistance, I find myself starting to feel some sort of resentment towards the evacuees. I hate to admit it but there have been times when I see Louisiana license plates on the road, and I immediately have negative thoughts. I'm all for helping people and I think the overall friendliness of the the residents here is what makes our city so great.....but at the same time I worry if in the long run our city is going to be worse off because of this. Does anyone else feel this way sometimes, or am I just a jerk?
You are a POS, PAB, Jerk. Actually, i hate to say it, but I feel the same way. They broke into my motor vehicle, and stole some stuff. How do I know it was them? I had other valubles laying around, and they didn't want to jack that? Hell, they didn't even take my pants. They took my wallet and went crazy at Wal-Mart, and some Gas Station.
I'm not sure I resent anybody, but I will say that Midtown has a lot more vagrants/bums just wandering around aimlessly since Katrina hit. They ask you for money and generally make you feel unsafe. I now have to worry about my vehicle getting broken into a lot more than I used to - I hear a lot more stories of that in this area. I've started taking a very angry tone with them when they bug me on the street. I want to make damn sure they don't feel welcome around here. I shouldn't have to deal with that crap right outside my door. Nobody should.
It's no coincidence that the crime rate has gone up since Katrina. The crime in Houston is getting down right scary IMO.
I don't think there is any question Houston is worse off. We basically took in all of NO - the good and the bad. We knew going in the only benefit would be the residents' gratitude. We are now facing the repercussion. What are we going to do about it? Forget about hindsight.
I feel the same way. Almost a year later and some of these folks can't get a damn job? WTF? There's no question FEMA has screwed a lot up since the start but damnit you have to start getting on with it at some point. Get some work and get on with improving your situation already.
WE'RE DONE HELPING NEW ORLEANS!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE LET THEM HAVE REGGIE BUSH TOO. ENOUGH ALREADY!! i've heard some horror stories from home. you know, this will sound bad, but that hurricane might have ben the best thing to happen to some of those people livin in the ghettos in new orleans. now alot of organizations are building these folks new homes, not to mention the assitance the government is handing over now... and i know houston has taken in so many and are helping people rebuild their lives. "thanks for taking us in houston.... now we're gonna get everything we can out of this deal. after all... i deserve it. i mean, my dope got washed away in the storm!"
Vote everyone out of office starting with Bill White. It's on his hands. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Someone needs to take the fall.
I was at a Vietnamese import car repair shop like a week after the refugees started coming in. The nice owner lady was making derisive comments toward those people at the time, and I couldn't relate to her comments. I can relate a little better now. I guess unjustly because of nightly crime reports. Every time I hear a N.O person speak, I find it somewhat strange to hear them speak since it sounds like everyone is a Juvenile wanna be. But I guess Texas accents sound funny to most. It seems the city is more on edge now. I travel away from Houston for long stretches of time, and when I come back the city just seems a bit more hostile every time. Katrina effect? Compassion fatigue? Maybe.
i was in Houston about 2-3 weeks ago... was with my parents filling gas when about 4 guys pulled up out of their vehicle...one of them had a gun sticking out of his pants ... being from Toronto i stopped pumping gas… paid as fast as i could …and scrammed out of there...and this was in Sugar Land...supposedly a 'rich' neighborhood... I don’t know about you guys but if that guy did that in Toronto ..someone would have called the cops…which would have led to the whole block being shut down…
Texas does have the License to Conceal law QUESTION: Was this person black? hispanic? Would it have been different if they were another ethnic group? You didn't mention an accent so I am unsure if the person was New Orleans native It is easy to see the increases. . . trust me I do I live on the southwest side and at times I am very concerns about the increases How ever. . . I have met some really kewl people from N.O. As with anything the negative gets more press than the good. They are different. . nothing wrong with different that is .. until you interpret it to be threatening or with a negative connotation ONE MORE THING: I think alot of Houstonians are becoming more aware of how sh*tty the underbelly of N.O. was. . . while we were enjoying getting drunk and showing/seeing tatas for beads a whole sector of the city was living at a very sh*tty level. [Not unlike visiting living the lap of luxury in kingston, Jamaica *one of the poorest areas of the islands so I'm told*] Rocket River everything has a price . . . even compassion Charity means giving without expectations to an extent I guess we had more expectations that we originally thought
Rocket River that was another impresive post that makes you think..Never thought about it, but charity can have a long-term price, and the hope is people will try to be good people regardless of status, or obstacles in all regards...
i remember when ch. 26 showed the press conference with mayor bill white explaining that crime was on the rise BEFORE KATRINA HIT
they were four black kids with pants hanging from their knees...race was not a concern, however their demeanor and style of clothing was. the plates were from New Orleans.
I wouldn't care what the race was.... If I saw a kid with a gun sticking out of his pants, and his pants down to his knees I'd be concerned. That isn't the way I'd expect someone with a concealed weapon license to carry his gun.. no matter what race ...
