I have to admit. Karl Malone is a MASTER at dirty play. Aside from a couple blatant mistakes that he has made through the years, he is amazing at finding unproveable ways of inflicting pain and doubt upon his victims.

He never carries out his evil plans in ways that could be penalized by the league. He never appears to be the instigator of an injury, but year after year and game after game, there he is... standing under the basket with his hands down by his side creating the perfect catapult to destroy someone's career with an "unavoidable" yet vicious and dangerous undercut.

I think the best way to understand Malone's tactics is through a quote from Darrell Royal about luck. He said, "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." In other words, good things happen when you prepare and learn to put yourself in good situations.

It is incredibly rare that Malone actually tries to injure someone, but it is the fact that Malone is constantly the direct cause of circumstances that are extremely dangerous on the court. He has no respect for his opponents and he intentionally plays basketball in ways that encourage injuries. Malone might say (if he had the IQ or self awareness to realize it), "Injuries happen when bad intentions meet opportunity."

My interpretation of Boki's accident (without the benefit of a replay):

Malone was off balance and was bumped under the basket on Boki's fast break. Rather than avoid a dangerous situation, Malone stopped directly under the basket in Boki's path of travel. Malone made a decision not to go for a block, not to go for the ball, not to block out if Boki missed the layup, and not to avoid contact. The most dangerous possible thing he could have done other than a flagrant foul was to stop in the path of the basket and undercut Boki. Malone either made a conscious decision to hurt Boki, or he made a subconscious decision to hurt Boki. I wouldn't doubt at all if it were subconscious - he has had 20 years to perfect his style of play and he has learned hundreds of ways to manufacture these horrible situations.

If Malone had an ounce of respect for Boki (or human beings for that matter), he would have taken one extra step to avoid the undercut. But instead, he masterfully stopped under the basket and innocently kept his hands at his side to avoid the appearance of aggressiveness.

There was no accident in that dangerous collision.

    here's the replay

Good post as well, Malone always knows what he's doing.

Boki was right to grab his jersey to break his fall, Malone kept his jersey on as if he wanted to say "I was fouled" or something... totally stupid..

Did anyone notice how he tried to grab Boki's jersey when Boki blocked him, But our hero Nachbar just slid out of there and let Mailman fall on his ass. Then he just walkd away with class and style...:D

Karla was quoted as saying he left it on b/c he was a "warrior"...

"I'm a warrior," the 40-year-old Malone said. "The more torn my jersey got, the more I loved it. They tried to get me to change it, they said it looked bad for TV. I said I don't care, I'm wearing my shirt."

    what a clown...

    Thanks DonnyMost

Well, it was a lot worse than my original interpretation. He CLEARLY was not off balance like the commentators declared (which I believed before), and he CLEARLY made an effort to come to a dead stop under the basket. Very sly though. He certainly made it look like an accident without the benefit of the replay. The off balance appearance of the event was solely due to a little stategic "flailing" done by Malone after Steve passed the ball.

I'm not sure on this, but it appears he might have stuck his hip out to assure the contact.

That should actually be a fine from the league for a flagrant II.

Boki made a hall of famer look like a complete punk.

No wonder Malone wanted to deck him.

Some "warrior", getting dunked on and stuffed by a 2nd year bench warmer.

    BOKI FOREVER.

I really believe that Malone is so stupid that a little anger just melts all of his memories and thoughts into some kind of paranoid delusion that everyone is after him and he has to fight back. He is just not smart enough to deal with hardship with any other emotion than revenge. His ripped jersey instantly transformed itself (in his mind) from the result of a bad play on his part to the symbol of a warrior?! Somehow the commentators even forgot that it ripped before the confrontation, not during the confrontation.

Karl Malone angry. Karl Malone hurt person that made him angry.

In his mind, he is justified doing anything. It amazes me that fans actually like him. Hell, I'll root for Oakley because he'll rip someone's head off that irritated me, but not for one second will I believe that Oakley is a good person. Yeah, I enjoy a little revenge sometimes, but I know right from wrong.

Malone absolutely did it on purpose. He has done it thousand of times in his career. It looks to me (someone plays bball for a long time), Malone actually thought about what kind of dirty tricks he can do on the court without getting caught, and perfected his dirty tricks.

Ever saw that one where Malone holds the ball, while spinning quickly, "accidentally" drill Barry on the face with his pointed sharp elbow. It looks like Malone was protecting the ball, while Brent Barry was bleeding heavily and his whole face was messed up.

Remember when David Robinson fouled Malone's elbow with his face? DRob is sure a dirty player. To think they suspended Malone for a whole game too! What was the NBA THINKING SUSPENDING THIS FINE NBA PLAYER?!

[/sarcasm] a small handfull of you are a bit dense from what I've seen the past year...:p

Ok. I answered my own question. Here is the site that has listed many of Karla's history of cheap shots. I hope someone kicks Karla in the nuts while an anvil simultaneously falls from the ceiling and falls on his big head in the next game. Here's an excerpt and a link to the site...

    http://www.makingpages.org/hoops/Malone.danger.html

The Early Years: The Ramer Incident
When Karl Malone was still in college, he threw an elbow that sent Rice center Dave Ramer to the hospital and ended his career.

From the December 6, 1984 Washington Post:

Rice junior center Dave Ramer will undergo reconstructive surgery Friday in Houston to repair multiple injuries suffered in what Coach Tommy Suitts says was an intentional elbowing incident in Monday's game against Louisiana Tech. Ramer has a depressed cheekbone, fractures above and below his right eye socket and a collapsed sinus after the incident involving Louisiana Tech's Karl Malone.

Malone had gone up for a rebound and came down swinging his elbows. Ramer was unfortunate enough to be in the same area code. The blow shattered Ramer's cheekbone, and he went down screaming in pain. Malone just looked at him and walked away. Malone's coach was so appalled by Malone's behavior that he went out on the court and told Malone to go back and show some decency and concern. Let me repeat that for emphasis:

Malone's coach made him go back out on the court and act like he cared.

It was obvious that he didn't. Malone muttered a forced apology, but of course Ramer was in no condition to hear it.

Ramer never played basketball again. Amazingly, instead of going to jail or being sued, Malone went on to the NBA and his career flourished. But he didn't stop sending people to the hospital.

Thanks for the video. It clearly shows that Francis did not collide with or push Malone off balance. The under the basket angle is the best one to see that there was actually no contact at all.

Looking at the under the basket angle for the Boki block, it shows that it should have been an offensive foul on Malone. Notice that the only contact that takes place down below is Malone using his off arm to elbow Boki.

I have argued with Laker fans who have said, and i quote:

"OK, I have a question for you: did Malone jump up and run after slackbar, smackbar, or whatever his name is? No. He got up and walked slowly, barely looking in the guy's direction. It didn't deserve a "T", and Malone didn't get "all pissy about that play", as you've mischaracterized it. Trust me, we've all seen Malone when he's angry. Malone was not angry about that play. "

    There's more:

"Please. He did not jump up. He got up very slowly, and he walked, just like the other players around him. And not in snackbar's direction. I watched the game, I watched the replay, several times. There was no attempt by Malone to go after the little weasel. None whatsoever. "

Supposedly Malone said to boki, "Hit me harder than that!" It just doesn't make sense. He blocked your shot, Karl. It shouldn't have even been a foul, and your response is "hit me harder than that". What a moron.

Malone had no intention of popping Boki, but he got back up with fire in his gut because his ego had just been HAMMERED.

He walked after Boki like he was actually -going- do do something, which is grounds for a Tech.. Karla was trying to play mind games and it bit him.

Hard to believe Al Michaels and Doc Rivers think they saw Francis push Malone under Nachbar and that Malone was off balance.

What the video clearly shows is that Malone literally jumped underneath Nachbar and ducked to undercut him better.

Malone did this right in front of Steve.

Are Rivers and Michaels for real?! Are they watching the same replay?

If Rivers can't even break down a play as simple as a blatant undercut - it's no small wonder the Magic finally imploded under his tutaledge.

After learning that Szczerbiak is out with two broken vertabrae --
and watching the relpay posted above by DonnyMost --if the league doesn't suspend Malone then it's just not right.

Further -- listening to Dork Rivers and Al Michaels makes me wonder who is pulling their strings -- because there was no way Malone was under Boki in any way other than because he wanted to be there.

Malone's post game comment referring to Francis as a gnat would back that up. How could a gnat push him into position under Boki?
