So I had to post a thread comparing these two coaches. Anyone who knows anything about coaching would agree that they are both excellent coaches who have done very well in the NBA. The fact remains that everybody probably has their opinion on who they think is a better coach. Some say JVG, other RA. I would say that you really can't compare them because it would be like comparing apples to oranges. Here is my analysis why: Basketball Style JVG- JVG plays more of a half court, very efficient type of basketball. He is a possession coach. He wants every possession (both offensively and defensively) to swing in his team's favor. The reason why he likes a half court offense is because he wants to get a high percentage shot every time. The fact of the matter is, he only preached running when management told him they wanted to score more. JVG would rather score 70 to 80 points a game and win by 10 then score 100 and allow the other team to score over 80 points. That's the way JVG is.. and always will be that way. Is he a bad coach? NO. His players will tell you that (most will), but his style of basketball is becoming extinct in the NBA. RA- RA has a style that players and fans love. It allows creativity. When he draws up a play, he only shows where people should be (position wise). he never diagrams how the play should end. Why? Because he wants the player to decide that. RA's offense provides up-tempo scoring and a variety of scoring options. You can rest assure the games will be very exciting. RA does not focus on defense as much. He does however force his guards to play the passing lanes to generate more fast breaks. His style is comparable to the Suns, Dallas, and the Larry brown Pistons. Coaching Technique JVG- JVG is more of an old school type coach. He yells.. A LOT. Practices are short because there is less teaching and more yelling. Players ran just to run. JVG is also very stubborn. It's his way or the bench.. Maybe a trade. RA- Players love him because he gives the flexibility. He is not a legalistic coach like JVG is. His practices are long because he is a teacher, then a coach. NBA Success JVG- Players have loved and hated him. He is known around the league as a defensive guru. His teams are ALWAYS at the top of the league in all defensive categories. Most fans hate him RA- Players love him. He has one of the highest winning percentages as a coach. His team always are top offensive ball clubs. fans love him. All in all.. I think both JVG and RA are top NBA coaches. Management just wanted to move to a more up-tempo style to satisfy fans and attempt to win more games. With the new roster additions.. RA will have a wealth of success.
I am a little concerned that Yao will be asked to play a Webber/Divac role. Yao has been low post monster, how effective will he be at high post? Opponents are not as scare if Yao stays there. Webber was mobile enough to either take it to hoop or shoot at a high percentage at high post. Yao cant do that. Let him post most of the time, and let him free wheel a little bit sometimes, I think that's the way to play him. He is still a traditional center.
This is a very tough question, considering that both are exact opposites of each other. I voted for Van Gundy, simply because I think he did a good job with the Rockets while he was here and he deserves credit for that. Remember that when Yao went down and our team seemed lottery-bound, Van Gundy was still able to save the season. In an Adelman-styled game, I don't think Mutombo and Howard would've been utilized as effectively as Van Gundy cleverly did to fill them in for Yao.
I'm going to develop and market a Jeff Van Gundy punching bag. Well, I say market... but those suckers would sell themselves on this board! Now you can beat, beat, beat, and BEAT on Jeff Van Gundy long after anyone else cares... for REAL!!
I have never seen Rick Adelman coach a Rockets game so I can't answer this stupid thread topic question. However, I will say that up here in New York, everyone LOVES JVG. They want him to replace Isiah if he does get the axe, but of course there's no chance of that happening since JVG hates Dolan, who's the dumbest owner in sports. Univision is the worst cable service too, even worse than Comcast.
I think this poll would be more appropriate after the season, or at least after Adelman coaches a handful of Rox games Historically, both have never won a ring and have not developed rookies. They are totally different, and this team needed a change, so hopefully at the end of the year the answer is RA.
I did this a while back (I might have posted it on this board, I don't remember). Just looking at offensive and defensive rankings for their teams, over the years. JVG had one of his best years as a coach last season, which I don't include here. Some observations: Van Gundy has hardly ever had a team better than "average" on offense, while Adelman has hardly ever had a team worse than average. Van Gundy's teams always play superior defense. Adelman has coached a variety of teams with different types of talent. He's coached some excellent offensive teams, as well as some excellent defensive teams. And some of his teams were great at both ends.
Interesting how JVG's worst year offensively (not counting the injury-plagued season) was the year he went to the Finals.
Hmmmm, this is a tough one for me......whom to vote for? Gosh, let's see.... Oh, what the heck, I will just flip a coin. DD
RA is known for not playing rookies, and even worse, not developing them. That's just what Blazers fans and even Kings fans told me. THey said he was forced to play Peja and Turkoglu. JVG has a better track record with young players, like Camby, Head, Hayes, Yao.
Stupid and pointless question considering we don't know what the RA Rockets will look like yet as we haven't seen them on the floor in at least 1 regular season game yet
Voted for Coach Gundy. All I know is that during the regular season, I was happy and proud of our team. We did some AMAZING stuff to get the 52 wins. A full season of joy is far better than a sad ending to one 7 game series. I also think that from Coach Rudy, to Coach Gundy, to Coach Adelman was a natural evolution of Team Rockets to win the championship. And we will win it. I don't really know Coach Adelman. Maybe by January, but now, all I know is he's quite a bit more offensively oriented. Cool. I'm hip to that. This is going to be a great season, and better post season!
kevin martin? i'm pretty sure he had something to do with picking the player at the late 1st round. same with brooks.
martin played in half the games and averaged 10 mins per game that he played in. most of you b****ed about JVG not playing rookies, well Adelman doesn't really either (I'll give you Peja but counter with 2 seasons of Gerald Wallace riding the pine)
The coach of the Houston Rockets is Rick Adleman which makes him my favorite coach in the league or TV booth unless he totally tanks which is next to impossible with our current roster.
