I tought, it was interesting (during Cavs-Celtics game). JVG: The only team in the West that can cause problem for the Lakers are Rockets because of their ability to put 2 great defenders in the game (Shane, Ron) who can slow down Kobe Jackson: I don't agree at all.. That makes no sense Why? Jackson: Because the Lakers have big guys who can stop Yao Ming. JVG: Oh come on. That makes no sense. Bynum or Pau cannot guard Yao one on one. Please, stop it. There is no chance they can stop Yao. The only thing that can cause Yao problems is their help defense. I love the fact that JVG still loves, defends and belives in those Rockets.
Mark Jackson sucks as an analyst. He has no real input or intelligent insight when it comes to breaking down match-ups or analyzing teams. He just says whatever the conventional notion is, and sticks to it despite any arguments JVG or anybody else might make. If he would have landed that coaching gig in NYC, he would have been what Terry Porter was to Phoenix.
I agree with both. No Laker can stop Yao 1 on 1. At the same time Gasol always plays sufficiently enough to offset Yao's performance. To beat LA we have to hit 40% from the 3 and Yao is going to have to take it to the next level.
I was watching the game to. Poor Celtics. But times like this when I hear JVG comment on the Rockets makes me wish he was still here and was blessed with the players we have now play for him back then. I understand its a business but imagine what JVG could do with a team like this. I mean Ron Artest would be a player he would love to coach. Defense Defense Defense. Ron and Shane boy JVG would be in heaven.
Usually, I think that is just the Rockets coach talking in JVG, but it somewhat made sense in what he said. I don't think Pau and Bynum will shut Yao Ming down to the point where he is ineffective, at least not like Okur did. They're not floppers and their one-on-one defense won't slow him down, if he gets hot or start to takeover a game. If Dwight Howard can't slow him down, I doubt Bynum will be able, too. Also, the Bobcats swept the Lakers, during the season, does that mean the Bobcats would stand a better chance against them than the Rockets.

Teams from other Message Boards probably say the exact same thing about JVG. I like JVG but lets not act like what he says makes a lot of sense especially when talking about the Rockets.
Mark Jackson should not be an analyst of any kind. The dude just goes with the most popular opinion of the day and has no ideas of his own.
Because Gasol takes adventage of Yao on the offensive end. Gasol can hit those 15-18-foot jumpers all night long and with Yao guarding him, he will get those wide open looks. Yeah I know. I was a big time JVG hater after the 06/07 series against the Jazz. I just hated the guy. Right now I understand how smart he is as a person. He knows a lot about basketball but he hasn't done anything with this team in the playoffs as a coach.
Shane and Ron don't phase Kobe in the regular season. Should the Rockets meet the Lakers I hope that the our dynamic defending duo can wear Kobe down so that over the course of 7 games he doesn't have enough in the tank to pull off the 4th quarter heroics. I doubt it will happen but I'm hopeful. Regarding the Yao comments, there is no doubt in my mind that Yao is currently the most dominant one on one player in the game. Give him the ball within 12 feet of the basket and he will kill anyone. Of course, nobody guards him one on one so unless Super Shane and Ron are forcing Kobe to guard them then he will continue to come from the weak side to disrupt Yao. How Yao hasn't caught onto this after years in the league is absolutely impossible for me to understand but whatever. Let's hope Scolandry can keep Gasol busy on defense and our wing players can keep Kobe honest so that Yao can have the most one on one opportunities possible to embarrass young Andrew Bynum.
Actually, I think Gasol would do the same thing Okur did against Yao: Flop, Flop, stand outside and shoot, and then flop some more! They won't put Bynum on Yao cause he won't be able to, but Gasol is a flopper so they'll try to get him off the court with foul trouble.
wish that applied to okur in the jazz series but gotta love JVG. he is loyal. that's why i still respect the guys. and mark jackson is a hater. at this stage, we're the only team who can slow down the lakers in the west b/c of our size, depth, and defense.
No big man can guard Yao, that's why he always gets blocked by little guys. Other teams need help defense to guard him. Lakers have a lot guys, like Ariza, Fisher, and Odom who like to beat up Yao on help D.
Listening to both of them talk I would say JVG is the more delusional one. Especially earlier this year when they would ask who was the top 3 SG's in the league and he would throw T-mac in it every time until finally T-mac was not playing.
on paper that sounds about right with our 2 ace defenders ... but whether we analyze it right or not, we don't match up well with the lakers. we haven't beat them once this year i believe. kobe destroys us regardless of how well defended he is. yao > bynum and gasol for the record though.
