He did say they are looking to make a move today and hoped that it got done. I didn't hear if he meant guard or power forward. Also said regarding foul calls, the team is getting the reputation of being a bunch of "whiners". He did admit there were some questionable calls in the Seattle game, especially the final foul on Yao. Mentioned that the NBA said they would look into the refs call against Yao. He said the NBA has been looking into the past year and a half and have done nothing.
That's great new guys, DA is the best bet out there right now IMO. Let's work him in, see how it pans out, sign Swift and land either Simien or Gilchrist in the draft for next year... Spoon's coming off the books then too, great trade bait a year from now...
Asked about the chances of a trade again. They know with Bob's injury they are in a bad position and need better guard play. They need help and they also want to get better money flexiblity for the team down the road. He mentioned earlier they wanted to free up money for Yao when that time comes.
He mentioned specifically GUARD PLAY He also talked alot about Financial Flexibility to build for the future. This leads me to believe the Payton deal is on the table, maybe moving Ward, but probably Mo with a draft pick. BTW, why is JVG in studio with 610??? Shouldnt he be on a teleconference call with Carroll somewhere???
Man this is frustrating. If we had any depth at all at the 1, we'd be sitting pretty on a 10 game streak.
When asked about Strickland: Didn't have any better options when they picked him up. He's tried very hard to get himself in shape, but now has been thrown into the fire against two high power teams. It's not a Rod Strickland or Andre Barrett issue, it shows how good Sura is. Yao and Tracy will have to led the Rockets through this difficult time. End of show.
Yeah, exactly. It's funny how winning and losing can effect fans. You could win like 10 in a row against really bad teams and suddenly you are tops in the league. You could lose a couple against the best teams in the league and you suddenly desperately need a trade to right the ship.
We've been playing good ball....but the reality is that during the streak, we WON 3 or 4 games the same way we lost the other night....during the streak, Barry naiuls that jumper from the corner and we go up 1 with 3 seconds left....we lost to 2 good squads...sh*t happens. That being said, I think with Webber leaving Sactown, (and IMo weakening them), if we were to add a PG, it could serve as a "double win", so to speak, for us.
I get that and I feel it too. I'm just saying that losing on the road to the best team in basketball isn't exactly cause for panic.
no doubt....but i think that losing Sura when we did (granted it shold only be a couple weeks) may serve as a wake up call for us to fortify the ship...as opposed to righting it.
host John: without bobby sura how thin you are at the point guard today todays the trade deadline, had your druthers? Would you like to see a point guard come in here? Jeff Van Gundy:Well I think this I think uh, you know, theres no doubt that we’re in a precarious position right now and have been really the whole year because of injury at the point uh we started off with injuries with Bob then Charlie ward then we traded tryone lue then sura comes back uh injured again and uh really right now Rod is just trying to work himself at 38 into shape and Andre obviously undrafted rookie had some pretty good moment at times but obviously uh this should be learning year for him and uh we owe it to our team to explore every opportunity to try to get better today and also uh try to if we can , financially do some things so that we’re in position to add uh pieces as we go down the line uh because we know and we saw the last two nights how far we have to go and yet at the same time we fell good about we have close the gap a little bit but theres a lot more work ahead of us. host Lance: coach how do you approach the improvement of your team, weighing out and balancing the face the fact that you can make moves this year….you’re still building so you don’t want to give away too much, you don’t want to sacrifice for jus the last 30 games of the season.. How do you balance out doing whats best for the season vs. the long haul? Jeff Van Gundy: Well I think that is a very valid point I think we want to create the habit of winning here uh some of our guys have lost a lot, obviously before last year the Rockets had been in the lottery for 4 straight years so you don’t want to head back to the lottery and obviously I don’t think people…you know we’re in a precarious position, our schedule, our injuries… we need to try to fortify our team this year but as you said not be, you know, throwing all of our eggs into this basket, what we have to do though is create some financial flexibility as well somehow over the next year so that we can resign Yao, so that we can upgrade and continue to build, and so that hopefully down the road we can compete for a championship I'll post some more in a moment...
Last year it seemed each game the opposing PG would go off for a career night when playing the Rockets, this year when Sura and Wesley are in there they all seem to have bad nights - which is a good thing. However this year it seems to be the opposing PF that has a career night vs. the Rockets. Everyone is ringing the alarm bells over PG but it's the PF's that are lighting us up. I submit that a very strong PF (like Kurt Thomas) would have a bigger effect. I agree we need both and best deal issues are in play.
Lance:...its going to be tough with matching contracts they way they are in trades, you know they only way to do that is to trade uh a multi year contract for a single year contract to... i guess thats what your talking about because you cant do it head to head..because they..(incoherent).. trade exceptions. Jeff Van Gundy: right. or even split up like if a guy makes lets say 8 million and you take two 4 million a dollar year guys sometimes being able to trade... uh you can trade smaller contracts easier than you can trade big ones and also even if you get a year less on contract, it may not be a one year contract, but maybe instead of one year contract mabye you break it up in to two 2 year contracts, whatever it is, you just need some financial flexebility to be able to avoid the luxury tax and certainly we all think the luxury tax is gonna be even more punitive in the nexxt collective bargaining agreement uh so we neeed to be able to fortify our team now and in the future so hopefully today we will be able to do something that'll help our team this year and hopefully we'll be able to do something today to help our team down the road financially.
