for at lest five games to see if he is the cancer of the team (like some fans said). If it's true, Rox should trade Yao before his value get lower.
How is benching Yao gonna tell us whether he's the cancer of the team? I nominate this for the most relevant post of 2004.
Bad idea ... I do believe Yao has deficiencies, but he is still a good player. When I criticize him, I only do it knowing how good of a player he can be. Bottom line is that just like Francis and Cat, the Rockets are a much better team with Yao on the court. He and SF specifically could do alot better, but they are still better with them their.
1. it hurts a player's value when you just bench him for 5 games 2. i think that yao is just worn down. he's been playing basketball nonstop and i think it might benefit him and the team by limiting his minutes to like 25 per game
Actually i was thinking about giving him a couple of nights off to maybe get some rest, and regroup, and get his confidence back......not because he is a cancer
I, too, am in agreement. But as other people said, he simply looks beat out there. I think more of the reason he stinks it up after the first 6 minutes or so of the game is 'cause he hasn't had a day off since the summer before his rookie season.
Benching Yao is an Idiotic Idea Yao anchors the defense. Period. w/o Yao, you'll see just what what saw during our latest loss to Boston. The defense is porous without Yao. That's the biggest problem. w/o our D, we're at the mercy of high scoring games against prolific offenses. Best solution, IMHO is to get a legit power forward who can contribute offensively regularly night in night out. theSAGE
Yao needs to play. If he is having a horrible night, fine, sit him down for a bit. But he should start the next game and the game after that, etc. If he needs a night off, that is fine too, but he really needs to just play.
It's not a suprise he's tired, it's a suprise he's NOT tired. I'm sure resting him every once in a while is a smart thing to do.
I don't think hitting 11 3 pointers is a result of Yao not anchoring the defense. I honestly don't think our defensive scheme is set up to combat perimeter scorers like Boston has. We trap the slashers. We surround the post. We do NOT pressure the outside shooter. Boston's whole game is the outside shot. Our defensive scheme is to force the other team to shoot it from the outside. I could tell going into that game Boston would score some points. They're not a great team, but they're not a good matchup for the Rockets.
I think the smartest thing to do would be to fake an injury during the All Star Break (even if he gets voted in) and have him just rest for those 5 or 6 days. IMO, it would make a big difference to our entire season.
Actually, I would like to see Yao take around 30 days off and not even look at basketball. He should go to a nice vacation spot to relax. If the Rockets go into a big losing streak, then it shows how important Yao is to the Rockets and the whole team including the coach is up for grabs. If the Rockets play well in his absence, he should be traded in the offseason. It's good resolution.
I agree. It doesn't look good to bench him. Just put him on the injury list for high ankle sprain or something. However, I'd extend the 5-6 days you suggested to 30 days. Make it worth his while to go on break.
I wrote this thread because some fans on this BBS said Yao is the cancer of the team, and looks like JVG gradually agree with them. To prove their correct, Yao should be benched for several games to learn how beautiful when Rox playing without him. I mean bench him for whole game instead of resting him every once in a while, because even playing one minute, he can still spread some bad "cancer cells" to his teammate (we know who are them), makes them can't play beautiful Rox game which they have been playing for last five years.
On the other hand, the opposing team will consider a Yao-less Rocket the bottom of the barrel and take them lightly. The Rox underestimates bad opponents all the time. Hey this could be a great strategy to the playoff goal.
