"I think he should ask some people on youtube how to get in a defensive stance" Jeff trying to give Phil Jackson a run for his money on jokes.

No wonder he didn't want to keep him as a draft pick. He thought he couldn't play defense. Gay for Battier trade has JVG all over it.

In the long run I think it'll prove to be a bad trade (because I don't think the Rockets are going to win the championship before Battier is old and useless) but that is a gem of a comment.

You are on a bad team. Your management decides to sell the franchise. They trade the best player on the team for the worst player in the NBA. They cut the veteran leader. Mike Miller is being shopped for draft picks. They hire an offensive minded coach...

And you want the guy to play freakin defense? What the hell? The teams goal is to get ping pong balls Jeff. C'mon. These guys have pride. They aren't gonna get in stance, slap the floor, and yell "lets do this" when Brian Cardinal and Kwame Brown are your basket level defense.

    LOL

I thought they are trying to "develop" their young talent? How about the young talent develop some winning habits?

How does a guy show pride when he gives up on games just because his team is losing? Pride is what Brandon Roy did last year and continue to do-- fighting hard every game even when his team is overmatched.

JVG does have a point of lighting up Gay whenever the Rockets played them. He isoed Tmac and even Battier on Gay. The problem with Gay is he's not quick enough to guard 3's and too thin to guard 4's. He does get a couple blocks coming from the weak side but those are overrated.

To be fair to Gay, that whole team doesn't play defense. Kind of surprising, since even the Suns, as Memphis' coach used to be an assistant there, play decent defense. It just seems a lot worse due to their high pace.

On the other hand, tweeners generally have defensive shortcomings even if many in the past have excelled on offense. And Gay is definitely a tweener.

Exactly. And it's not just JVG. Adelman did the same thing this year too, with Battier. Well, maybe Battier just takes it personal ... there are few times you see Battier just completely own his man on both ends of the court, and he did that to Gay earlier this season. Shut him down on the defensive end, then proceeded to beat him off the dribble several times on offense and light him up from distance.

Gay is not a good defender - not at all.

    This is a great idea!

    Also,

Perhaps we can help JVG make a video asking people how to draw up an offense. If we had thought about this earlier, perhaps he could have taken the Rockets past the first round with the stellar defense and all, and would still have been able to get shopping $$ for his wife.

Yet Gundy finds all kinds of excuses for Tmac's nonchalant defense. That comment is the epitome of why we signed Adelman......

The Rockets are not exactly the Phoenix Suns on offense. As a matter of fact they are less efficient this year on offense than they were last year.

Yao and Tmac just never meshed the way they were supposed to. It's either one or the other. They should be invoved together in more plays. Most of it is Tmac's fault for not being aggressive enough when Yao is in the game.

Jeff is a funny man. My favorite commentator outside of Bill & Calvin. Probably the best thing he said was, "LeBron James spent all day watching tapes of the Spurs in his hotel room. I mean, what else can you do in San Antonio?"

JVG's light hearted riposte was fine...Gay was never destined to be a Rock...Gay is 'funner' to watch than Battier but is still not Battier's basketball equal. Probably not before ASG '09; or Fall '09...or ever?

Gay is an atrocious defender. You know you suck when you can't stay in front of prominent slashers like Shane Battier. :D

JVG is GREAT as a color commentator. It's just weird to see how funny the guy is when he isn't a coach.

He's said funny stuff as coach too... like "Well, McGrady is McGray here." People just failed to appreciate his sense of humor and got all offended at the fact that he was making fun of Spanoulis.

The only time when he isn't funny is during post-game interviews. He always looks and sounds like a train wreck after games, even if Rockets win by 20.

Gay's athleticism is kind of perplexing. He can run like a gazelle (wink, wink Clyde) and jump out of the gym but his lateral quickness is on par with Shaq's.

I think bulking up would kill his offensive game and probably would not help him much defensively anyway as it looks like he could not care less about stopping anyone.
