One thing I observed over the last few games is that with the first unit on the court, we severely lack good cutters. A quick breakdown:

    1. Rafer - while he occasionally cuts and tries to create space through moving around on the court, he cannot make that open jump shot reliably, resulting in the passer been hesitant to pass him the ball. As such, he does not command respect from the opposing defensive player, who would sag off from him to double team another player.

    2. Tmac - Its not about HEALTH. Even when Tmac is healthy, he would not fit into the "motion offense". Tmac likes to have the ball in his hands, consequently he would try to lose his marker to come out to get the ball. I have a feeling he dislikes running around screens. Most notably today, when Yao had the ball at the top, there was absolutely no movement, leading him having to force a pass, which was ultimately intercepted. If the minute Yao caught the ball, and the other 4 players started moving, that would have lead to someone being open, and a much easier pass for Yao. However, I remember last year, he did try to run around screens to get open shots, but he didnt do it nearly as enough.

In comparison to some of the european players we saw against portland and lakers, they would run around screens all day to establish some space for an open shot. We dont have any player like that on our team, well we do, luther head, but he tries to do more than it is asked of him.

The problem is that when Tmac runs around screens, he expects a pass. This is not the point of moving without the ball and runnign around screens. So if Tmac doesnt get a pass after having to 'waste his energy' running around, he usually settles for jumpers afterwards and there goes our motion offense.

    3. Ron artest does try to mix it up every now and then. But he just doenst have the energy to run around screens all day (plus he is too big), and having to defend the opposing team's best player. His strengh is using his power to his advantage, and runing around screens all day clearly doesnt suit him.

    4. Scola is the only starter who is buying into the system.

    5. yao is too big to run around screens, hence his only job as ew saw today was to faciliate and distribute the ball. But when no one else is moving, and the offense is in a standstill, pass becomes easily interceptible.

    6. Barry - I am quite disappointed with Barry. I thought he would be perfect in this system, runnign around screens all day and shooting set shots. I guess he has lost some endurance and speed which makes it hard for him to lose his defender.

    7. Aaaron and Carl - when these 2nd years have to save our butts over and over again, I feel quite embarrased. But they have bought into the system, and can excecute it as well as anyone else on the team.

Thats just a quick breakdown. I believe that even with all the players healthy, when the 1st unit is on we will rarely see the free-flowing offense we see with our second unit. However, this not a bad thing. When the first unit is on, we play to our strenght, isos and low post kicking it out. However, we will bog down on defense. when the 2nd unit is in, we need to however transiition into a more free-flowing offense as the individual abilities of the players are much less dominant.

I agree with you , especially for Tracy, I don't know what's the matter with him. But his attitude towards the game really disappionted me, he is too lazy, I think in the last few games, Tracy just likes our burden, encumbrance. i guess without him we can play better. He was not suppose to be on the court until he is fine

wow usually these types of threads are ignorant-- a stupid reaction after a loss.

But I gotta give you props man. I agree with many of your points. I think Adelman has to one day realize the skillset of our two stars are not suited for the motion offense. Actually with aaron brooks, I think JVG's system would work so much better. I remember we used to yell at rafer for failing to penetrate and score under the JVG era, and a second guy who can penetrate and score efficiently is sorely needed. Now we have this guy, bring bak the painful gundy ball to Houston :D .....

Well, it's not too far fetched. Lakers use a slower offense with their 1st unit. Then they usually go fast with their 2nd unit.

Would moving Artest down to the bench help?

I'm not sure, cause the offense we are playing now was clearly not how it was like last season. Which disappoints me a lot. But then again, Tracy is just not there.

Mentally or Physically. Why? I have no idea. He had this same moment around 2-3 years ago around the all-star break. Tracy is too inconsistent, we don't know when he'll start mentally breaking down.

Hopefully, he'll get his act together. Same with Yao but in a lesser extent.

I have a feeling that he lacks endurance compared to some of the other stars in the league, at the end of the day its so much eaiser just to hoist up a shot than to run around

    hotblooded,

Good point. I was thinking the exact same thing. It just seems to me that McGrady and now Yao just don't get it. I'm trying to understand why.

Is it possible that both McGrady and Yao are "laying down" on Adelman?

I just find it hard to believe that Yao would ever do anything like that. Yet, he has looked absolutely atrocious for most of the games this year. He either is hurt, or he don't get it, or Adelman is playing him in the wrong position (high post), or he is laying down. Of those possibilities, I'd have to say it is most likely that Adelman is not playing him to his strength and he is hurt. Yao is too smart not to get it. And Yao's attitude is not such to lead me to believe that he would lay down on a coach. I really wish Adelman would go back to keeping Yao in the low post and working the ball around him as the focal point with that first unit. That is, if Yao is not hurt.

McGrady, on the other hand, appears to be a slightly different case. Remember the play where Kobe blocked his layup/attempted dunk last night? That was evidence to me he doesn't get it or he doesn't care. He makes the cut, gets wide open, Scola throws him the ball from up high. That play was a simple play. And the pass was high enough for him to lay it in in one motion. Kobe could have never got there to get close to it. But instead, McGrady continues his cut, then turns and faces the basket, catches, then gathers himself to go up for the shot. All that time gave Kobe a chance to recover to the ball and make the play. McGrady took a very simple play and made it more difficult. And got it blocked and we got negative points out of it as LA ran back and scored.

I don't know if McGrady wants to get it. And I think he is obviously playing hurt..........again. He has to be one of the most fragile players in the NBA. Everytime he gets hit, I'm wondering if he is going to get up. Everytime he falls down I want to holler "Jenga!". Dude just collapses like a sack of sand sprawling all over the floor. He just looked plain terrible last night.

Artest? Is it possible that Artest's strong personality is fouling up the chemistry out there? I just don't know. Because we sure ain't clicking. Dude plays his tail off. But both Yao and McGrady look they belong in D-league. Why? Are they struggling with Artest's personality? I don't understand it.

Adelman? What in the world was he thinking running out Scola, Landry, Brooks, Barry, and Luther Head as a unit? Not a single defender in the bunch. None of them can stop their man. And they played for an extended period of time on the floor in the 2nd half. And we fell further and further behind. And Yao is shooting a 20 footer when he can't get it rolling in the paint? Come on now. I don't mind Yao shooting a 20 footer, but only after he has established his interior game.

I'd never thought I'd think it but I'm wondering now if Van Gundy was really right about us offensively. I have a funny feeling with a guy like Artest that Van Gundy would be cleaning up right now. He'd just park McGrady on the pine and go with Artest.

How much of Rafer do we have to see to know he doesn't really fit in Adelman's system? How long are they going to try to continually sell everybody that we need Rafer out there to calm everybody down? Get real man. He totally screws down the offense.

    I'm disgusted.

Wonder why the 2nd unit does better than the first? RA runs fast pace offense. With a small line up (Brooks, Barry, Landry, Hayes, Head) out there, they would be faster and would run better and set picks better. With a big and slow Yao and a lazy T-Mac, things are not going to work, they have to stick to half-court offense)

I fell the exact opposite for our first unit. When you have three all-star players on the court, you should be able to use them all.

If you have three great players and one of them is isoing, then you might as well just have one great player. We have been giving it to one of the three and they have been posting up or jacking up a shot. If we actually could move the ball a little, we would be in much better shape.

Jop, I don't think Yao has a problem getting this offense, I think it just is never working the way it should. You notice that when Yao goes up to the high post and gets the ball and pivots to look for the pass, there is nobody to dish to for an easy basket. Why? Because when McGrady is on the court there is no motion offense. He just doesn't run it. He doesn't move without the ball, he doesn't cut, nothing. I don't know if it's laziness or just thinking he doesn't need to, but usually what he does is just hang out on the 3 point line or the post. Yao ends up having no one to dish to but the guy who comes up the line to grab it from him. I mean it's to the point where they just need to cut it out completely. If nobody is going to execute the offense properly, then don't send Yao to the high post or to the perimeter. Why get him out of the post if the other players are just going to botch the play anyway?

I also think it is almost all Tmac's fault for the offense failing...he doesn't like it, and he doesn't run it.

Remember last year when he bumped his knee and was out for 14 games? Rick forced the team to run the offense and lo and behold it was working....

Tmac came back and ran it for a while then slowly reverted it back to his style.

Tmac is a great player, but he is not someone that wants to change. Maybe he should come off the bench and let Artest and Battier start?

To be fair, DD, Artest is much more of a "offense clogger" than TMac. But both are not running the offense at all.

Blake, I agree about Artest, it was the primary reason I did not want him...he doesn't fit.

Of course, I also said that if you can get him for nothing, you have to do it...but that doesn't change the fit part.

i think the biggest difference between tmac and artest though, is that once battier comes back artest will do whatever it takes off the bench including running the offense

i think the 1 and 2 game the rox have with yao will start clicking when battier gets back and we have a reliable option to hit the corner 3 and spread the defense, and if rafer doesnt get his shot fixed, we need to get a good 3pt shooting guard

its like tmac just wants to stand at the perimeter looking bored and watching the game, not participating in it, he's current pissing me off

i should change my name to yaolimon
