What do I do now? My wife has our old dog cage and is putting carboard around it so the ferret can't get out and so my dogs can't attack it (they are chi's). Guess we are going to give it some water from one of our old dog bowls and buy it some food from walmart.....we are going to give it a day to see if we see anyone that's missing a ferret...in the mean time, what else should we do. We know nothing about ferret's and we anyone be intersted in homing it..........no fee. We just care about animals in general..... Tim
Take it to the Houston SPCA. They adopt them out just like guinea pigs and rabbits. Since they rarely come in, it should get adopted quickly.
I used to have a ferret in college. I love those little things. They don't smell too bad if you have their glands removed. If they're bought from a breeder or pet store they usually are. They have their own special food. And they do it in a kitty litter box with normal kitty litter rocks. They inquisitive as heck and can get in really tight spaces so make sure they don't hurt themselves. Mine crawled up inside my couch and it was hell getting her out.
Make sure he can't get out of whatever cage you plan on using. And when I say "make sure" you have to REALLY think of every possible exit because ferrets are creative little creatures. They can squeeze through pretty much anything. Water out of a bowl is fine. Buy some generic ferret at food at Wal-Mart or wherever (likely $5 or less). I would also recommend buying some litter since it will make clean up easier in the long run.
Walter Sobchak: Also, let's not forget - let's *not* forget, Dude - that keeping wildlife, an amphibious rodent, for uh, domestic, you know, within the city - that aint legal either. The Dude: What are you, a ****ing park ranger now? Walter Sobchak: No, I'm... The Dude: Who gives a **** about the ****ing marmot! ------ Always what I think of when I see or read about a ferret.
Ok, got him a cage that he can't escape....some ferret food and water. Gave him a shirt to sleep in.....hopefully we find his owner, but at least he's safe tonite... Tim
Make sure you get a reward $$$ for keeping that ferret in good condition. At least to cover your troubles. Those things cost like $120 at petSmart.
I owned a ferret when I was younger. Put some towels in the cage because they like to burrow and nest in them. If you've got it, put some dry cat food in a bowl and mix in a little water to moisten it. Lots of water. They love fruit, especially grapes and bananas. Not too much though, as it'll give them....digestive problems. Chances are it's house trained, so a small little box with some cat litter in it would work as well. They only stink when they're not fixed. Males smell worse than females, and it's more of a musk smell than anything else. But then again they love taking baths too (at least mine did) so cleanliness isn't really a problem. They love to push open doors or squeeze under them, so make sure the cage door is secure unless you want to find him running around your house.
Way back when, a guy that worked for me had a couple of ferrets...He would bring it in every so often..thought it was weird to have one...still do...
Good News!!! I was just about to sell it for my costs on Craigslist.....but as soon as I picked up the phone to call, the owner called my wife and said that she had lost a ferret. My wife put up flyers by the mailbox section of our complex, btw. So, it ended up being a kid's ferret and she knew exactly how to take care of him. The ferret was actually a her, lol. So, everything is cool!!!
I hope that if my pets ever get lost...tim562 finds them. You haven't seen my Burmese python around...have you?
