So yeah... here's the story, My friend and i were on the way back to my house after playing some bball at the rec center, and we were both driving so anyways.. he was in front of me and decides to joke around and go 10 mph on a 30 road. ( there was no traffic on this road)

It was funny at 1st but he kept doing it so it got really annoying. (oh and it was 10pm so it was quite dark) so i decide to pass him on a 2 lane non passing road. So in the process of doing so there was a sneaky lil cop hiding in the most dark area part of the road and saw him sitting there, as my head lights shined over his car.. i knew right away i was screwed. So he ended up pulling me over and gave me a ticket for going 24 over 30. I was quite shocked cuz i didn't think i drove 54 mph but w/e.. i guess.

So now i have the option to take a defensive driving course. So that way it will stay off my record and my insurance won't go up. Has anyone had to do this before? was it hard and how long did it take you?

I haven't taken it in a long time, but Defensive driving is really, really easy. If you can, take one of the comic ones. It's just a matter of killing a few hours, and a few jokes help that go by pretty quickly. I remember it being 20 multiple choice questions, all of which, they cover in the class.

That's an easy question. Take defensive driving and don't get another ticket anytime soon. Simple as that.

Funny you would post this now. I got pulled over today on I-45 North and, once again, talked the cop out of writing me a ticket. :D

I also got a 24 over once. Its actually what you want, because if you get a 25 over you can get arrested and hauled to jail. No defensive driving eligibility for +24

I took the online defensive driving, got it taken off the record and lowered my insurance.

All in All cost was probably around $300.

It's easy. You can do it online on your own schedule.

The defensive driving course is slow torture and should be banned by the Geneva Convention.

    How old are you?

Take defensive driving. The courts get paid enough for it and it doesn't show up on your record.

FWIW, I got 19 warnings before my first initial ticket. I was good with the puppy dog eyes and "dad's going to kill me" lines.

After I got caught by the same officer twice, they all had a vendetta towards me.

    (course this WAS Bellaire...)

They do online now. You used to have to waste your time in a boring class. When I sat through the class the instructor fell asleep. One guy went home and slept for 2 hrs after our lunch break was over and still got credit. We had to take an incredibly easy test, which most of the idiots in there failed, but they were allowed to change their answers when we went over the test. Long story short, they are a joke.

I've taken defensive driving like 5 times, it's no big deal. Just wait a year before you speed again. You can't take it twice in 1 year.

It made me less cautious. I was like "huh, that's it?"

    So I kept speeding.

First, 25 over will not get you hauled off to jail. I've got pulled over for 96 in a 65.

Second, defensive driving will not leave you record clean. It's not a huge deal but your record will show that you got a ticket for speeding but it'll also show that you took defensive driving. You just don't get that "point" on the point system. I think if you get more than 2 points in a year, your insurance goes up.

Third. www.sullolaw.com. Thats the route I will go from now on. $75, thats all you will need to pay...and your record will be clean.

I had been driving for 6 years and had never gotten pulled over before.

    I got clocked doing 84 in a 60.

Stupid southern outskirts of Dallas and their cowtown cops.

He didn't even really ask me anything, just for my info, and then he handed me the ticket.

    I was pretty freaked out.

So I signed up for the online class, all you really have to do is get through it. Its 6 hours long, pace yourself because you do have to pay attention.

Yeah you know now I that I think about it, I was thinking about another incident. My Friend once got caught doing 70 in a 35 and the cop threw him on the hood of his truck and handcuffed him and said he was taking him in for reckless driving.

But I do know the ticket I got said you aren't eligible for DD if you were over 24 MPH.

    sorry for the bad info.

Ugh, and now I realize that you weren't born at the time I got my first ticket...

Court charges roughly $100 bucks? (I haven't had a moving violation in years so let him know the cost.)

Ironically, IIRC, is it lowers your insurance premium 10%.

I-45 just south of Dallas? That area, especially Wilmer, is such a speed trap it's a joke. For that 10-15 mile stretch, I drive exactly the speed limit. There are other areas between Dallas and Houston where you can go as fast as you want to make up time.

Next time you drive up there from Houston, notice that 99% of the cars who had been moving at 75-80 mph suddenly slow down to 60 mph right before Wilmer. Last year, one guy I had been tailing for a long while didn't know any better and you would have thought the police car was shot out of a cannon he was on the guy so fast. Me and another driver who was part of our trio just looked at each other and rolled our eyes. In that area, I've seen guys get pulled over for going 5-10 mph over the limit.
