After weeks and weeks of getting my butt whipped, I finally managed to defeat my long time tennis rival today for the first time! We play each other roughly three times per week (3 or 4 sets each time) and I have never ever even come close to winning. One time I lost 4-6, but that was the best I had done up until today. He usually wins 6-0 or 6-2.

Today, though, it was all working. The serves were going in and my lobs were dead on. Groundstrokes, which are the worst part of my game, were good enough to keep me in it. Before I knew it, I was up 5-4 and serving for the set. Two aces and a couple of hard fought points later and I had put him away 6-4! :)

The fact that he killed me 6-0 and 6-2 in our next two sets is irrelevant....

I'm going to celebrate with a victory beer.

Does anyone else have any similar stories of overcoming a long time rival?

Oh, I thought you meant to call you Agassi because you had gotten tired of your receading hairline and shaved your head.

    My bad. :)

    But...

You did not defeat him, you took 1 of 3 sets. If my knowledge of tennis is still on par it should be game, set and match. I guess at least you didnt post about beating him in a 'game' while losing the set 1-6. :p

    and...

I'm only pulling your leg. Congrats.

    ....maybe ;)

Besides, I was so happy about finally winning a set that I didn't care about the others.

Its a little similar, but I am on the flip side I guess. I've been playing basketball against my wife's brother for a few years now and I have a pretty good win streak against him. We play up to 40 by 1's at least once a week. I cant remember the last time I lost to him. This past sunday I was on the verge of losing. It was 38 - 30, he was 2 points away from ending my streak. He was hitting everything. But he finally missed one and since we play "winner's out" (thats what its called right? I usually just "say make, it take it") I knew I could control the game.

I knew my shot wasnt falling so I had to post him up. I scored about 5 shots in a row, and then I missed. He scored one and then I stole it from him and ended up scoring the last 5 points to win 40-39. Closest game we ever had. I think it's probably a lot harder on the person with the streak than the one trying to end it. At least for me it is.

There is nothing like sibling rivalry. I used to "try" and play my brother at basketball but I constantly got beat. He is 5'8.5" and up until a couple of years ago when he hit his 30's he could dunk. Needless to say he has ups. Plus he has an ultra quick first step. I've picked up more imaginary jocks for his opponents than I can count. He got invited to play summer pro league with the Rox a while back but couldn't go. I have beat him one-on-one TWICE in my 30 years on this planet. Now I just whip his ass at golf. :p
