Has anyone seen this guy Jeremy Wariner run the 400m? He is simply dominating in all the heats so far. He is the favorite to win the gold as well. Link One of the more surprising stories of the Olympics for me. Plus he's from Baylor.
He isn't mixed? He doesn't look like a 'normal' white guy to me. Althought it doesn't matter in the least to me, I'm just excited to see an American kicking ass.
That guy looks really strong. It is strange watching him because he looks so young...but he runs so smooth and is just dominating. I look forward to the finals. Baylor never stops producing those 400m runners.
My roomate grew up with him next door. They went to the same highschool and so she was rooting for him big time. I never heard of him until a few weeks ago when she mentioned him and the olympics.
I loved how in the first heat he just eased up and strolled across the finish. Dude has some serious wheels.
I heard them talking about him on Sportscenter last night (Matt Winer and Michael Johnson). Johnson said that he hasn't lost a race this year - hopefully he will continue his winning streak in the 400 final. As a former track person (ran 2 years in high school), I think the 400 is the toughest race, by far (hurdle races are excluded).
I was a hurdler for 6 years, both the high and intermediate. I have a box full of ribbons and trophies and medals. By far, it's my favorite event to watch. I felt really bad for Gail Devers last night.
Yeah, I feel as though the 400 is pretty tough too. I can't really comment on the longer races (800,1600, etc), but I did/do run the 400 and that is the toughest for me. I guess it is because you should be able to sprint it all or close to it if you want to be good at it. I don't know if you could do it, but I can't. I've gotten better, but I still can only maybe sprint the 1st 50-100 meters, then I won't turn it back on until maybe 100-150 meters away. If it wasn't for adrenaline, I probably wouldn't even be able to do that. And then after that, you legs feel like jello and you have to take a few minutes to get you breath back. During the relays, I always wanted to congradulate my teammates, but I was too busy trying to recover from just running 400 M. Then again, I probably shouldn't be a 400 M runner. I probably am built more for the 100 and 200 but since my school doesn't normally have many track athletes, we usually run the 100, 200, and 400 in some combination. It sucks for the people who have to run the 400 as an individual and as a relay and then have to run something else, all in one day.
Never heard of the guy before a few days ago, but after being in Baylor now for a few days, word's getting around about this guy.
I hate when the runners do that. That's taunting without the eye contact. I wish they would screw up and get passed. It's nice to see Baylor good at some athletic pursuits.
I guess then you wouldn't like American Shawn Crawford's wearing a baseball cap in his 100m race either. The US team told him very quickly after the race to never pull that stunt again.
who did gatlin bump chests with at the end of his preliminary heat? Gatlin and this dude were looking at each other smiling the last 20 meters...they killed thir heat, and slowed up at the end showboating...but i liked it.
I didn't catch the prelim but I must assume it was Shawn Crawford( the guy wearing the baseball cap in the previous prelim). Crawford and Gatlin are training partners in California. BTW did you see Gatlin celebrating after he won gold. He went around the crowd and hugged every American he saw and gave high-fives to everyone else. I liked that emotion.
Could the fact that sometimes they don't want to go all out in the prelims have anything to do with this?
Yes, it was Crawford. I was pretty sure that he was stronger than Gatlin. He must have been very disappointed to finish fourth, but that field was really strong overall. Crawford's physique kind of reminds me of Linford Christie. Gatlin seemed like a nice, humble guy in the interview he gave German TV.
They're running all out and then the last ten feet is too much for them to run at the same pace? On the replay, he was slowing down in the middle of the race. He noticed the other runners closing in and he turned it up a notch to get seperation, and then slow down again near the end. Perhaps he was saving something dramatic for the finals, but he was definitely sending the other runners signals that they can't touch him.
