I am on my first Jury duty in Los Angeles. It is really strange because there were two broadcasters in the pool. One was the boxing analyst and broadcaster Larry Merchant. They asked if there was anybody who was actually hoping they get picked for the trial, and Merchant raised his hand. I thought that was interesting. He seemed like a really nice guy, who discussed boxing with some folks. The other guy is Joel Meyers, who broadcasts the Los Angeles Lakers games along side of Michael Thompson. Meyers and I both were selected to serve, and Meyers is a really nice guy. My spot is right next to him. Today we just talked about wine, and what wines are good, and where to buy them etc. I'm going to talk to him about basketball starting tomorrow. I obviously can't discuss the case at this juncture, but I thought it was really strange that two sports broadcasters would be in the same jury pool on the same day. Anyone else ever served with anyone who is an "D" list local celebrity?
larry merchant does the guy talk that slow in day to day conversation? meyers seems like he could be a nice guy but he has always upset me as a announcer...he does the laker tv games now, used to do the radio games last season or the season before
Larry Merchant actually does talk fairly slow in regular conversation as well. He and Meyers didn't know each other before, and they had a lot of shop to talk about early on. Meyers did annoy me some times early on as an announcer. He seemed like he was guilty of over valuing a lot of Lakers' players, but I guess I kind of have to expect that from any home town announcer. I am looking forward to talking some basketball today.
I once showed up at jury duty and Sylvestor Turner showed up with his ontourage. It was pretty funny, because at the time he had recently ran for mayor. He just kinda sat there with this ho-hum look on his face. I ended up getting picked that day to serve on a case where a civilian was accused of battering a police officer. He had enough evidence to nail him, but a few didn't think it was enough. I honestly believe that only a very small portion of defendants get convicted in front of juries.
Sylvester Turner would have been mayor if not for Undercover 13. I forgot what happened. Poor guy. First the chicken ranch. Then Turner's mayoral campaign. Bastards.
